after a short successful flight i plugged in the USB cable to check. the motors started trembling and one motor went up in smoke and became very hot.what's wrong ?

That means that you had a bad connection between the motor and ESC on one of the cables to that motor. If you check your bullet connectors, you'll find the culprit. Any time a brushless motor starts trembling, you should cut power immediately. You have just seconds before it will burn out. This is true on an vehicle, from planes to quads. I've killed plenty of motors this way, and it's always been due to a bad ESC connection or a break in the wiring inside the motor itself.
At any rate, it has nothing do to with APM or code. This is strictly a problem between the ESC and the motor.

Sorry to hear that. This happend to me twice - both times with front right motor rocking rapidly back and forth.
