I have no clue about the MTK GPS API; can someone who knows comment on whether it would be possible to do this - i.e store the GPS state blob on the APM flash? GPS startup times are pretty long at the moment.

I see there is a message to start the GPS in hotstart mode which means it fetches all data available from NV memory. There is also a warm start and a cold start option. Maybe this is the way to go. I also use the uBlox GPS and it defaults to the stored almanac unless it is too old. The start up times on the uBlox GPS is significantly faster than the MTK one.

Yes, it is possible. However, you need to use a battery backed GPS. Search the forums, or PM Jani (his store will have a battery backed GPS soon)
3DR used to sell a battery backed uBox adaptor.
