Power Module help, probably a stupid question.

I recived my APM yesterday. I had some trouble with the manual so i decided to ask here. Ok, so if I connected the power module the the PM port on the board, do I need to connect the red and black wire from the PDB into the APM? I don't think I do, but the manual said I need a ground connection to the ESCs. What I understood Is that you still connect the wire from the ESCs, but remove the little piece (think it's called a shunt) from the JP1 pins. Is this true?
