I was just looking around at the procerus website and was just wondering why their ublox gps receivers are so much more expensive ($325) then those that we can buy from sparkfun, or the diydrones store? for less than 100$? (when they are in stock :P) The procerus ones are 50channel, with 4hz update rate, and most of the things on the data sheet are similar to the cheaper alternatives, I might be missing something but was just wondering?
So is it just that they charge more for customer support? Or am I missing something obvious?
You need to be a member of diydrones to add comments!
Also don't forget that you get tested components, modified to work best together with other hardware in general.
You can buy an autopilot separately for $5K but the same AP in a production UAV may cost $10K - why? because all the pain of trial and error, dialing in the gains, etc...and crashings (LOL) have been done for you. :)
I don't think you are missing anything. What you will get is one that is "supported". I used to work for Cisco Systems, the memory in our routers was mainly PC memory or the same as HP Printer memory for the most part, 256MB from Cisco was over $500, the same from the local PC shop was $30. The catch was that you would not get support if you used non-cisco memory, it was this fear factor that kept people buying "genuine", even though the "genuine" cam out of the exact same factory and was the same product as the stuff the local PC shop sold.
