More seriously, I am new to the game and coming from the Space business, I have been surprised by the widespread usage of MS Windows, which, in terms of reliability is not the best solution.
As for image processing, GNU/Linux is slow on the client, hence the Mac platform.
The Mac, IMHO would greatly help writing the mission planning software as the Cocoa provides the Core Graphics framework.
