Scratch Built Tandem Wing

Looking for input regarding motor angle and maintaining CG.

I think I've got some pretty consistent glides with the scratch built tandem, (many more than what's in the video below), but without any electronics, motor or anything other than the body and wings.

I can locate the balance point on the body for a start to try to obtain/maintain CG.  Getting everything installed for a powered test should be a matter of distribution of weight.  I would like input regarding that as well as help/ideas for spreading things out w/in the fuse to keep CG.  Should I use bigger wires and seperate ESC from motor, or run extension cable to battery?  That type of stuff.

Also, I remember some posts regarding the angle of the pusher motor tilting slightly up.  This pushes front end up, right?

    Brian,

Andy Lennon published a great book called the Basics of R/C Model Aircraft design, it's available through Amazon. I consider it to be my Model Aircraft Design Bible! It makes great reading. Andy has several sections relating to Tandem/Canard design. He explains the theory in easy to understand terms, gives actual design examples, and if you like he presents the math. I think this is just what you need to make your project really take flight, and understand the principals behind what you are trying achieve!

    Good Luck
  • Hi Brian, I get it! It's a snowboard in one direction, conventional Alpine skis in the other! You need something for Yaw axis stabilization, maybe subfins that can double as landing skids.

I would go with an initial thrust line that is 0. Adjust from there. I would set the incidence of the front wing slightly higher. Keep the esc close to the motor. If you have to add wire, better from the battery to esc than the esc to motor.
