Support for contra / coaxial quadcopter - 8 motors

I was reading through the APM documentation and I didn't see support for a contra / coaxial quadcopter setup (8 motors / 8 props total). Is that something that might be added in the near future? Is it easy enough to modify existing configurations to support that kind of a setup? I am a software developer by trade (c# and objective c) so altering code isn't that scary. If anyone has any pointers it would be much appreciated.
