You could move to one of the LRS systems, TLRS, dragonlink, chainlink or EzUHF. These are on 433MHz. To be completely you will need a ham license. They have no problem going out to 5km or more.
U could make ur own module with a 900 mhz XBee, but you would also have to make the reciever as well. Why not just use xbee 900's instead of the xbee 2.4, Or you could find an old 30-72 mhz Tx/Rx and hack them to the Turnigy. Why? These radios are glitchy. Besides there's nothing worse than crashing because your buddy forgot and turned his radio on at the same time as you. I can't forget those days. Maybe try ebay or crags list and look for an old jr 8 ch 72 mhz. I've got one but my dad dropped it. after it crashed me twice 10 mins into the flight I parted ways with it.

yes you can use 2.4ghz xbee and 2.4ghz radio at the same time without any problems
but when you try using 2.4ghz video, you'll get a problem
