Verify Altitude question?

I am using arducopter 3.0.1 and the newest mission planner and have noticed that the "verify height" check box doesnt change the altitudes as you add way points any more, 


how do I go about my copter following changes in height on the ground e.g. starting on a hill heading down hill and back up hill again staying at the same altitude along the way?

does the new 3.0.1 use the barometer more in this way or?

    My understanding is if you are at 20 feet or less you can use sonar to do terrain following, otherwise the system uses google earth and that sometimes is not the most accurate when it comes to altitude or elevation of the ground.
