I want to make a fpv drone out of a Rare Bear (http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__27581__Rare_Bear_EPO_w_Retracts_and_Flaps_1400mm_PNF_.html) for high speed, short range video reconnaissance in fpv laser tag dog fights.
Right now we use a DJI f550 with naza but it gets tagged all the time as it is so slow and with out recon we we are having are butts handed to us every weekend.
Can the ArduPlane deal with raw speed?
Is the code editable (open source) so I can tweak it to add a real time video analysis mod/pic to automate some of the reconnaissance? (color identification and gps location data to identify location of other teams flag/air field)
Is it robust enough to be trusted with an expensive payload?
Is anyone doing reconnaissance with it already or will I be all alone in the development stage?

Yes to all the above. (Except for the Tagging thing)
the APM will give you :
GPS waypoints
Grid searches
Geo-fencing (dont go outside THIS area)
Autonimous flight
PC Joystick control
So you could make it circle above the battle area, or scan a spcific track.
You can then fit a head-tracking camera, video downlink and OSD, what you do with that video data is up to you!
The Rare Bear may not be the ideal platform, but you could use it. I would suggest a composite flying wing with a slippery wing profile.
Do you have a laser pickup on the drone as well?
