I am considering building my first y6 copter. I am in the process of making my list of items to get. Do you guys have advice on how to start. What parts are the good and what issues to look out for.

The KK2 has no autonomous capability or failsafe features, so it can be assumed isn't a concern, or GPS, telemetry etc. I had a KK2 and it's ok for just flying around with a quad, but be prepared for tuning a Y6 with it. You'll gain experience there for sure.
There are APM (basically a detuned PIxhawk) FC for under $50; Witespy has them for $39.
Oh well, you'll figure it out. Good luck.
BTW, 10" props will be too much for those motors with that frame weight.
Those are the motors I bought. I opened one of the motors I received today and tried to put it together to see how it works. I watched a couple of videos and I have a couple of questions.
1. Locktite on screws is a must?
2. The props come with a plastic adapter that fits into the bottom of the prop. The flat piece called the spinner goes underneath both the prop and the plastic adapter? And the hex nut goes on top to screw all the parts together.
3. How tight should you screw everything in considering they are tiny screws into plastic?
4. In the video I watched the guy talked about counter threads for the motor adapter. Is this necessary, what is the benefit of it? Do I need it for ccw props?
Felix, I think you're on the right track here. That is a very light frame so those 980 Sunny Sky motors should work great, especially on 3s battery and then 10" props would probably be ok.
APC makes good props, so if you go with them, get the 10x4.7 SF. Don't cheap out on props.
For ESC's, HobbyWing 20A XRotor would work well, they are low priced, reliable and light.
So I made a mistake I read it could 1.5 kg with all equipment. I thought it meant it weighed around 900g without. Another noon mistake. I am learning so much. It is great.
Yikes. Have you ever flown an RC of any kind? Plane, glider, something like that? I did for many years, quit for many years, then jumped into the Y6B, but first had a small quad copter with a KK2 FC, and even then I had a rough time getting used to the Y6B......no bad crashes, but it was a learning curve and some broken props/GPS masts.

Do you know the exact Sunny Sky motor you bought? A link to the specs? I ask because they changed some motors from 2014 to 2015.
I'd guess the AUW (all up weight) of the copter will be around 2kg with a 5000mah battery. Did you calculate the weight?
Hmm. I don't see where the frame weight with the booms adds up to 980g from their website; considerably less. Where did you get that number?

what do you think of the titan y6 from www.fortisairframes.com? Is this too big for my first drone?
