3DR Quad-C brownouts, Wonky Artificial Horizon

Greetings folks!

My team has a bone stock 3DR Quad-C with APM 2.5. We have successfully flown it after assembly but have recently had brownout problems and gyro problems. While hovering  3 or 4 feet, the motors suddenly die out and it falls flat hard. Afterwards, I held the quad and spooled up the throttle. It acted erratically, giving intermittent bursts of RPM, sometimes going even to 100% without command. Unplugged the main battery and connected the quad to the mavlink via USB, and the artificial horizon was all over the place. This has happened before and it necessitated a reflashing of the apm 2.5. I suspect that this is a power issue since all the motors, ESCs and connections are fine.

Since we do not have telemetry, I can't provide any data logs, sorry :(. But I hope that the collective experience of this group will be sufficient to diagnose the problem. Thanks!

  • I have the 3DR C frame also and have not experienced any brown outs but I only have less than 1 hour of flight time.

Stand-alone BEC? Do you a mean separate battery?

So if I bought 1000 mah 2S 15C battery? Not sure what the voltage range is for the APM2.

Do I need a common ground?

    I'd suggest using a stand-alone BEC.

  • I'm guessing you had a brownout, it rebooted, and then the crazy HUD is what happens if the gyros calibrate (after the brownout) while it's moving.  I've seen this a few times if I boot it up while moving it.
