I have a collection of DJI multis from the Phantom to the F550 with both Naza V1 and V2. All have GPS. I just ordered an X8 from 3DR as Ready to Fly and want to know if it will be comparable to the DJIs. When each of my DJI aircraft arrived I had to do an IMU calibration and a compass calibration and then it was ready for R/C flight. Is the X8 APMCopter similar? What, besides RTFM, should I be aware of as a first time APM user?

First off you tossed out all that money without doing some homework first? Anyhow if you educate yourself on the wiki quick start guide you will be fine. Everything should be calibrated and ready to go. You will have to do landing gear and props. I suggest balance well before installing. And I assume you got a radio with it? If you did charge and fly. If you didnt then you will have to setup a radio tx/rx that involved more. Anyhow Bob just like Charles led you check out the Wiki and also just follow preflight checks EVERY time you fly. I don't think lots of people do this and wreck a machine because of stupid things that could be fixed in a good preflight.
Bob the best place to start is here:

it's very comprehensive and should really help answer your questions , should you follow all the steps explained you could be flying your new x8 in no time
I would say from having used & tested many flight controllers, when tuned correctly the APM out performs the naza based systems on the market
