Thrust setting before Auto mode?

Hello, my name is Shu in Japan. It's my first time to post a discussion in DIY drone forum.
Hope this is proper way and place to solve a kind of simple technical problem.

Few days ago I have flown with ArduCopter 2.8.1 several times. (I know 2.9 is now released but wanted to do an important experiment with the one I have flown with before)

I heard that thrust value needed to be memorized before trying Auto mode by hovering in stabilize mode for 10 seconds or so.

I did that once and tried Auto mode, but when I tried Auto mode right after that, it couldn't really take off but "crawl" around with insufficient thrust.

This happend twice, but my copter flew well in Auto mode in third time.

My questions are following:

1. How long and how stably did I have to keep hovering for setting(or memorizing) thrust?

2. Is it OK to do that by holding copter by hand and try keeping enough thrust input for a few seconds?

  • Hi Shu,

1: I have just checked the code, and if I understand it correct the throttle_cruise value will be updated 50 times each second when the tilt is < 5 deg and the climp rate is < 60cm/s. There is a fiter on throttle_cruise so the old value counts 99% and the new value counts 1% (Said in other words it will take a few seconds before you have a reliable value )

2: I will say no and no need to because it's updated really fast.

If you have the code you can look for update_throttle_cruise to check it yourself.
