I think on the pixhawk it's some multiple of a Gauss. like a centi-Gauss or milli-Gauss. On the APM2 it should be the same but there was a bug in the scaling and fixing it would force all users to re-do their compass calibration so we've left it incorrect (because in the end the scaling doesn't matter too much).
