uBlox LEA 6H on APM and Pixhawk

Hi,

Before Pixhawk I used APM 2.5 with LEA6h, wanted to use it also with Pixhawk but was unable to do so. Now I connected Lea6H back to APM and got "no gps" message. Connected USB to Lea6h to see with u-center what is wrong and MP showed that GPS works now and has 3D Fix?!?!?

Is this some kind of power issue or what, please help.

Regards,

Raimo

    @Raimo,

    When you had your LEA-6H connected to either the Pixhawk or the APM2.5, did it display the red power led indicating that the GPS was receiving 5vdc from either FC?

    I have had no trouble using the LEA-6 as either the primary or the secondary GPS on my Pixhawk FCs and as the primary GPS on my APMs.

    Is your LEA-6 a 3DR combination GPS/compass or a clone? You need to keep in mind that when using the 3DR GPS with the Pixhawk it requires a 6 conductor DF13 connector cable, but the APM uses a 5pin to 6pin DF13 connector cable.

    • Hello Thomas,

      I'm curious as I have read this elsewhere...that is, one needs the 6 wire cable on the PH for GPS. However, the vast majority of "clone" GPS/Compass have a 4 wire to the PH and 2 for the I2C. So, I guess RTS and CTS are not connected in these cases.

      Does that present a problem? The other post I read made the highly technical observation that the PH would act screwy if there were not 6 wires.

      Thanks,

      Steven

      @Steven G,

      That might be the case due to the lack of RTS and CTS as the Pixhawk does talk to the GPS and not just read from it.

    • I got the 2 GPS working. The only way I was able to use LEA6H as second GPS was to connect a USB charger (unpowered) to the GPS USB port for a moment and remove it. It seems that it needs tohave a power consumption peak.

    • Hi,

      Power led on the unit is lit on both cases but no connection. My uBlox has HK power board and the uBlox LEA6H engine that is genuine, it does not have compass in the same unit. I made a DF13 cable according to pin layout, rewired new and old cable into one compatible unit.

      What is most strange is that when I apply power from APM/Pixhawk the power led is lit, when I power through USB that is on the LEA6H it powers also APM (have not tested with Pixhawk jet) and is discoverable and usable by APM.

      I have to do some measurements and see what is going wrong. I'm beginning to think that there are some power issues with the GPS HK power board.

      @Raimo,

      You might try reversing the Rx and Tx connections in the cable.

    • Hi,

      I can try this. If rx and tx would be reversed I would not get with APM in MP "3D Fix" when USB is connected to GPS module and to the APM board like I described in my previous post.

      But Thank You anyway TCIII !

    • Hi,

      I replaced on the custom cable tx and rx, it was not correct before, Thank You!

      Still I have the power issue witch makes no sense at all. When I connect the GPS to APM or Pixhawk the power led lights up but MP shows No GPS, when I connect additionally USB from laptop to GPS module MP finds GPS and soon I get 3D fix. As soon as I remove the USB it shows No GPS but power led is lit...

      @Raimo,

      Sounds like you need to use a powered USB Hub as your PC does not appear to be able to supply enough current to the navigation processor.

      I built my own USB breakout box which can supply two amps to my Pixhawk or APM navigation processors with all the accessories attached.

    • Hi,

      I powered all the units through GPS USB port and all works, even GPS :) . It seems that I just need more power for all the stuff connected to the board...

      Frustrating to find out such simple problems with so much effort.

      It's similar to a situation that I had (~10y ago) when I sold my old PC and some days later got a phonecall about a broken CD ROM in the PC that I sold. I went to the person to see what was wrong, I knew that all worked berfectly - CD was inserted label facing down :)

      Now I'm the noob...

      Thanks!
