Places to fly Arducopters near Tokyo

Hello,

My name is Oriol, I arrived to work in Tokyo in R&D few months ago from Barcelona. Back there I used to build and fly drones based on APM throught different tricopter custom designs.

I would like to know if there are any places near Tokyo where I can fly safely without breaking any regulation (ideally reachable by public transport).

I'm finishing a new version of the tricopter focused on mapping with a Canon camera triggered from the APM that I want to test.

I would also like to know if there is any group of enthusiasts that meet to build or fly drones & robots near Tokyo where I could join.

Below some pictures from the old and new design.

Hope you can help me, best regards.

    • Hi Takuya,

Thank you so much for the information. Both the 433Mhz and 2,4Ghz are ok for amateur radio and my telemetry is 100mW, so I think I'm in the safe side. What I don't have is the module mark I guess, the material is Chinese...

    Oriol,

I live out in Karuizawa which is about 1hr 10min from Tokyo station (using bullet train) so I fly either in my backyard or at a small field that one of my neighbours lets me use.  I've heard of others flying over the ocean in places like Kamakura but then you risk losing your vehicle if it crashes for some reason (which is much more likely if you're doing development).

  • Thanks Jiro & Takuya,

basically no urban areas, no airport areas, no crowded areas and always under certain height. Very symilar to Spain. The 2 locations Takuya showed are a bit far.

After reading the regulation and seeing the map, best options would be to find non crowded places outside of the marked areas. Saitama for example looks quite ok, big spaces otuside of the purple boundaries. West of Tokyo & Kanagawa are clear as well.

I also see that there are some regulations in each district.

  • Hi Oriol

Welcome to Japan and DIY drones Japan.

Oh, you are making very good looking Tri-copter.

However, this is not a best timing to try to fly drones in Tokyo.

We will not allow to fly more than 200 gram drones in the area of red on the following map from December 10 without authorization. Please refer to the new rules and Tokyo restriction area.

    New rule: http://www.mlit.go.jp/en/koku/uas.html

    Map:  http://www.stat.go.jp/data/chiri/gis/did.htm?/shichoson_13

There is some regulation on radio and telemetry.
