Medical Express

Outback Joe is at his property in remote Queensland, Australia and has been feeling unwell. He has had a remote consultation with his doctor using video conferencing, and his doctor has requested some blood tests be done as soon as possible. Joe is well prepared, has a home sample taking kit, and has taken his blood sample. The challenge is now to get the blood sample to the lab. Joe’s property is very remote and to make matters worse, it has been cut off by floodwaters.

Teams are invited to attempt to retrieve a blood sample from the remote Outback Joe and return it to base where medical staff will be waiting to analyse it. Teams must deploy unmanned aircraft to Joe’s location, and then return a sample bottle from him utilising a remote landing and takeoff site close to him. They must complete all of this within one hour.

  • Unfortunately due to various issues we were bitterly disappointed not to be able to get our D2 to a submitable level. But I thought I'd post the video of our QuadPlane flight in the 20 Knots over the weekend.

We wish all OBC competitors the best of luck and are always willing to help any teams out in anyway.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXZuqatKjM8

  • Well with only 13 known teams on youtube and this thread and maybe only another 7 or so unknown, unlisted or not yet handed in D2s (I'm guessing?), does that mean we could all be potentially going to the 2016 OBC because there were under 20 teams who handed in D2 overall? (Provided we pass D2 of course)

Was the VTOL requirement the reason for so many teams not making it, or are my assumptions about the unlisted teams way out? Hmmm I suppose we have to wait a couple more days (3days=15points) before we will find out! :-(

In the spirit of openness and friendly competition, we've shared our D2 Video and document if anyone is curious:

  • Hi JB,

    Thanks, just only made it.

V4 rules have just retrieval a/c for vid, our doco has both A/C in it.  I just reread the email.  Hmmm interesting.  Have to wait and see what they say then.....

    Chris

  • Thanks Chris. Glad you still got in!

No probs with the video. I'll link it once you have your hi-res one up if you want. The uploading speed always reminds me of a variation of the Dire Straits song: "I want my NBN" ;-) 3minute video 40minute upload. Bah!

The airframe looks familiar somehow. :-P

Not to upset the apple cart but I got an email from the OBC saying they wanted both aircraft in the D2 doc and video a few weeks back. Ours are the same so it wasn't a biggy.

  • Hi JB,

Sydney RPAs - our video was delayed due to some serious upload speed limitations.....

    https://youtu.be/mpwtTkc4Wr0

Most of the video was taken today, talk about cutting it fine.....  Funny thing is that we have TV producer on our team and due to timings on things he wasnt part of our filming or editing, so something that should be polished is very average.  The normal res video is on the way but I'm thinking Christmas will be here before it uploads, the low res took several hours.  I reckon I would walk the packets to youtube quicker, anyway.......  Note that D2 video doesnt have to show both planes, only the retrieval A/C and checklist procedure.  So my guess is those teams with one plane are only showing you the one as thats all they have to do.  Our support A/C is not shown on the video.

    Chris

  • Here's one more listed video for the list.

    Create UAS D2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJ43NhG_p2c

Here a Video Playlist so far for those willing to sink hours into watching pre-flight videos like myself: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwPZnOrHIsKelLsW6U7tZ53rdlmg...

We're currently unlisted (PerthUAV) but will list after we're through. Will be interesting to know how many D2's were received. I have a feeling it might be close to twenty anyway this time. Lots of quadplanes! Not that many all electric. Even some planes without wings! ;-)

Chris what was your Team name again if I may ask?

I wonder if Simon from Swiss Fang got in with their Albatross?

  • UNSW Canberra had their D2 submitted just in time. A collection of D2 videos I've found so far on YouTube (none could be found on Vimeo):

    ABES Aerial Robotics Team: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_wlsvl0l6k

Hopefully a considerable number of teams have opted to keep their D2 videos unlisted or private (and that the above aren't the only teams that were able to submit on time).

As for what we've seen so far; almost all of the teams are operating quadplanes, a fewwith support aircraft, most without, some with ICE forward flight engines, some going all-electric.

  • Ours went in just past the 5pm deadline - we'll take the points hit as we are in this for the challenge.  Was doing a video edit right on the deadline (last video was taken at 4pm today, talk about cutting it fine).  Would have been fine if we hadnt had our retrieval A/C fail (read crash really badly and not flyable - wasnt recording at the time either, grrr) in very late Feb.  Lucky we managed to get a replacement plane and electronics in late March and only got flight testing with this frame this week.  Quadplane is excellent but each setup needs careful attention we are finding.  Busy next few weeks to catchup on our project plan!  Hope we all make it in.

@Mark, sorry to hear it didnt come together - we only just made it.  Just start planning for next time incase none of us are successful :-(

  • Ours went in around lunch today with video. We're pretty happy with it, despite it being fairly repetitive to cover all the points in the order required. Overall we're impressed with the quadplane setup, really performs well and is fast, with a bit of tweaking. ;-)

    @Mark

That's a shame you can't make it. This is our second time and the deadline still crept up on us. I wonder who the lucky 20 will be!

Quadplane development

Some people have asked me about adding quadplane support for APM:Plane for OBC2016. I've started on the code for that, and last night got it to hover as a quad and smoothly transition to plane mode. For anyone wanting to follow along with development, the tree I'm using is here:https://github.com/tridge/ardupilot/tree/quadplane-wipThere is a lot more work to go, but that should give you an idea of the rough structure I'm aiming for.

Dalby OBC2016 location, mission and fence in SITL

I've added an approximate set of waypoints and a geofence for the example OBC2016 mission to ArduPilot SITL. You can get it in SITL like this:cd ArduPlanesim_vehicle.sh -L Dalby --console --mapparam load ../Tools/autotest/ArduPlane.parmwp load ../Tools/autotest/ArduPlane-Missions/Dalby-OBC2016.txtfence load ../Tools/autotest/ArduPlane-Missions/Dalby-OBC2016-fence.txtarm thottleautoThe coordinates are very rough, just taken visually from the supplied image. Please don't use them for anything…
