Wing reinforcement & servos

Just doing some research before I commence my build and was wondering what the general opinion of the forum is on a some points.

1. I've read that the standard CF wing connection tubes can break and the wing can flex if it is heavily loaded or flown in in strong winds so should I add additional stiffening spars and upgrade the CF tubes that are provided as standard.

2. I'd like to cover the wing as this stiffens it too, what covering material would you recommend, Wessie refers to a plastic film with a heat activated adhesive, is this just solarfilm, and should I put reinforced packing tape along the leading edges first, or is this just adding unnecessary weight?

3. Are Hitec HS 82 MG up to the job or should I go for standard size servos, I found these Hitec slimwing

are they any good?

I'm grateful for any advice, I am keen to get started given the ideal buildiing weather we are currently having.

Thanks

Martin

    @Martin,

I know this is a very old thread, but incase someone is wondering:

The 2015 configuration X8 now comes with carbon strip wing reinforcements and heavy duty plastic wing shoulders instead of the plywood.

Most X8 builders on RCGroups have recommended a servo with at least 2.5kg force or greater.

The Hitec HS-82MG has 2.8kg of force which meets the requirement.

However we went with the HS-225MG which is a mini with 4.9kg of force and gives us some margin.

    • Thanks Tom,

It's still in it's box awaiting construction, but will have to wait till I get to grips with my other Skywalkers.

I've mastered covering with plastic film, did you cover your X8.

I take your point about the HS-225MG and they're less expensive than the HS-82MGs.

I wasn't aware that the current kit had been upgraded, could you be able to give me details of the carbon fibre strips, where they are located and the dimentions of the strips, or maybe post some pictures.

      Hi Martin,

Here is a Link to the black version of the X8 though they do not show the carbon fiber strip in the wing which I think this version does not have, but the other changes are in the pictures.

I will take a picture of the wing on my version of the X8 and hopefully it will show up as it is really only visible at one point on the wing.
