About Me:

Semi-retired electrical/electronic engineer

Please tell us a bit about your UAV interest

I like analyzing mathematical problems, and then experiment with various hypothesizes to determine the best solution. I used to be an avid RC fixed wing flyer and experimental aircraft enthusiast, so when I read about the DARPA UAV perch challenge in 2012 and no one appeared to have a success this caught my attention. DIY Drones community seems to have a large following striving for autonomous flight and navigation, so it seemed like a great place to get caught up without the competition of the commercial groups. I typically use tools of the R&D trade like MATLAB and LABVIEW to rapidly throw together a prototype, but I have programmed TI and AD DSP chips in C/C++ and a Linux OS several years ago so since DIY Drones open source uses this language and OS then I’ll have to pull out the old reference books and refresh my memory. I guess you could consider me a novice, so I’ll try to not ask too many dumb questions.

David Neumann commented on Chris Anderson's blog post Time Magazine cover (with invited piece by me)
"We may want to shoot for some good news stories out there.  I don't know if anyone out there has the infrared capability on their systems, but you could offer your services to help find a missing person out in the woods.  I understand that FAA…"

David Neumann commented on Chris Anderson's blog post Time Magazine cover (with invited piece by me)
"I like that Chris brought up some of the more benign applications of drones such as crop monitoring, video tapping sports instead of hiring a manned helicopter.  I hope the unwarranted fear will wear off one day, but we have to go through the boogey…"

David Neumann commented on Eric Tweet's blog post Criminalizing Drones in Oregon
"Maybe the Oregon politicians don't want pictures of them with their girl friends or other not so good for public relations business deals?  Maybe the politicians are worried about folks using the infrared cameras to find all the marijuana and other…"
