About Me:

I'm a programmer that's worked for Motorola in the past. Now I work for Texas Instruments.

Please tell us a bit about your UAV interest

I've always liked toys that play with themselves so I don't have to. The remote controlled airplane has always been the epitome of toy, in my eyes, so it seems natural that I'd want to build a UAV.

I have studied Kalman Filtering with respect to inertial navigation for quite some time.   I look into the ArduPilot code and I see that it allows for an EKF to run on a per-IMU basis, and can choose the one that's best suited for navigation. …

Robert Stoddard replied to Chad's discussion GPS-Denied Autonomous Navigation
"The dynamic that makes the IMU + GPS EKF work is that the GPS error is constant over time, and the IMU positional error grows (from zero) with time.   The current state of mems IMUs today is probably such that it's unwise to allow it such "freedom"…"

Robert Stoddard replied to Jan Martin's discussion State of Dead Reckoning?
"The difficulty is the fusion of sensors.  It's easy to make a navigation system with GPS telling you where you are, but the moment you start judging your position based upon other sensors, you start accumulating error.  Allow me to lend you an…"

Robert Stoddard replied to Richard Gosling's discussion bad gps behaviour
"First post here  :)   Allow me to give my qualifications.   I was a WSN-5 tech in the US Navy.  Since then, I've studied inertial navigations as a hobby.
There is one big, bold problem with using GPS strictly as a means of holding the copter in…"
