Pitot tube install help

Is this proper installation of the Pitot Tube.

I want to put the airspeed sensor in the wing too to keep the tubing short between the tube and sensor. Then run the included electrical ,3-wire "servo lead", wiring to the APM using an extension.

The tube is 15" from the root of the wing.

Will it work well like this?

  • @Veikko - good point.  I was thinking more of the airspeed sensor being used during automated landings.  If there was a good headwind (which we have a lot of in Kansas - 15 - 20 MPH is common).  However with this said, I have a lot to learn about the Adrupilot and the use of the air speed sensor.

    Veikko,

Off topic but is that a parachute recovery system just aft of the wing saddle trailing edge?

    William,

I'm sure by this point it's a mute point as I'm sure you've already finalized your installation. However I agree with Anthony that you should get the static ports a bit further from the leading edge. As for parallelism with the airfoil section I wouldn't stress about it too much, if the increased AoA cause an increased pressure on one or more static ports, the opposite ports will be under negative pressure and will cancel this out. Ideally you would want the  active port to be parallel to the direction of flight in cruise. Thus may or may not be parallel to the wing in level flight (in fact most likely slightly negative maybe 2 degrees).

  • Is it possible for the airspeed sensor to effect both the motor and/or elevator?  What I mean by this, if the motor battery or engine is exhausted and the airspeed sensor senses that the airspeed is too slow, can it be set up so that the nose will be pitched down to increase airspeed?

  • Thanks for the reply. I was looking for confirmation on the pitot tip orientation. I feel I had an apropriate question regarding the install.

Now that its mounted and finished in the wing... I wish someone had pointed out that the tube is parallel to the bottom of the wing. big deal? I dont know. But I suspect now that because of the angle of attack on the wing the pitot will be receive pressure on the static ports of the pitot.

What may sound like silly questions with obvious answers by some of us in the forum. Are really not. Im sure my reading will be incorrect now. Cause the majority thought it a silly question?

A simple two second reply of "ensure the pitot is perpendicular to airflow not the angle attack of the wing.

  • Ok here are my .02 cents worth.  You might want to  extend the tube a bit more than that.  Reason being to get the static ports (holes on the side of the tube) ahead of the pressure increase that occurs at the leading edge of the wing.  In general the thicker the wing section the farther forward you want the pitot tube.  Just looking at your photo, I would go another centimeter if possible.  The length of the additional tubing will have far less (if any) bearing on accuracy than the ram hole and static ports being too close to the leading edge.

I found your post because I'm looking for a way to cleanly install a pitot tube on my Zephyr flying wing without butchering it all up.  I've decided I need airspeed because I can make better FPV landings if I fly a specific approach speed rather than using GPS (ground speed) in windy conditions.

    Good luck with your install.

  • Havent gotten a reply about this.  Done some reading in the forums.

I think I have a good installation though.
