3DR Y6 MultiCopter Maiden Flight and Review

Quick first flight video.

PROS-

Complete Kit

Open source Hardware/Software

Large community and support

CONS-

Manual could be updated with assembly diagrams and better clarification.  Some pics and instructions conflict with company website.

Everything has it's place except power distribution board, which leads to next issue.

Very hard to manage all cables and ESC's.

Still a lot of DIY tweaking needed to make fly right.

Would love to see other builders photos of how you managed cabling and/or ARF kit photos.

Pictured below is my Y6 before first flight.

  • yeah i notices it and I have fixed it.

I attempted the maiden flight today and it is very twitchy in the roll attitude. has anyone else noticed this? I am running 3.1 RC5 with the y6 4s param. Today was pretty windy so i was not ready to attempt any other mode of flight. on a calmer day i plan to run the autotune to see if I can get it better.

  • @Joseph Looking at the first picture you posted it seems that the APM is slightly tilted. That can cause calibration problems and lead to unstable flying so I think you better check for that and keep the APM module as flat as possible. Other than that great job and I'm studying your pictures and I should receive my Y6 in a couple of days and I'm already worried about where to put everything :D

  • @Joseph- Nice job on your build.  Looking forward to your first flight.  I'm just finishing up the edit on my post build review which should be up later.

  • I was able to get everything where it is suppose to.

    Maiden flight will be tomorrow.

  • My y6 has rctimer 2830/750kv with 12in on the bottom and 11in on the top. I will be running 4s 4400 mah. The plan is to start with the default y6 param. And then run the auto tune to get it really dialed in. I will report back.

Nice Adam.  Like Joseph, I had everything fit quite nicely.  However, unlike Joseph, I touched it again and again and again whilst playing with other pieces of equipment.  So it's not quite as neat as I would like.

I did find it quite easy to get it up in the air and it was stable as a rock.  The only thing I found a little off were the stock legs, but that's quite easily fixed.

    Cheers.

I found it very tight in the layer with power distribution board and cables, especially with XT60-Deans adapter. I might just chop that and hard solder my battery connector.

Would you mind posting your PIDs. I've been suffering from terrible wobble. I've improved it somewhat by drastically reducing my Roll and Pitch Rate Ps but haven't got it perfect yet.

    Post with details here.
