A44 EagletTesting

We took the A44 Eaglet out for some pre-production testing on a beautiful day downunder and couldn't help but tell the rest of the world about it. We're soooooo proud of this little plane.

    Dawid and I had a lot of fun doing test flights of the Eaglet on Thursday at CMAC.

    3702117163?profile=original3702117264?profile=originalIt is a really fun plane to fly! We did some tuning with APM:Plane and re-arranged the Pixhawk setup a little to reduce vibration and magnetic interference. That made the EKF a lot happier.

    The plane happily cruised at around 100km/hr, with a peak of 133 km/hr in one run. Like all flying wings it was quite sensitive to CoG, and you need to keep the elevator throw very small to avoid stalling the elevons. With it setup right it flies very nicely.

    On one flight we discovered a weakness in the wing spar arrangement. We experimentally added a 2nd spar as a work around and I've done 6 flights since. I think Dawid plans on incorporating the change (or something similar) into the final version.

    With a 2200 3S LiPo I got between 7 and 9 minutes flight time, although I do tend to fly fast. A 2800 3S would be a better choice I think.

    Ravi, fuselage structure is made from plywood with a foam core. This combination results in a light yet solid structure...it can take a lot of abuse! We tried foam sides but it was just not durable enough.
