Guys, stop buying and flying quads when you don't know what you are doing. Especially over crowds or populated areas. This should be common sense.

In my life I have done:
- Rock Climbing, including one multi-pitch
- White water kayaking and rafting
- Off-road motorcycle racing
- Car based motorsports including autocross, open track days, and rally.
How is this different than flying quads in cities? Easy, because I made the choice to risk my own life, and the only lives at risk are my own and people who chose to participate with me.
Flying quadcopters, airplanes, etc. dangerously "over crowd or close to other people "risks everybody else's health and safety "while you are safe" from "your reckless behavior". That's the difference. < edited by Mod to avoid mis-understanding>

I hope the NYPD nail this guy for reckless endangerment. I know that most drone hobbyists and the professional drone community would endorse this view. I am not a citizen of the USA so I can do nothing - but you guys in the States could make you views public instead of just discussing it in a forum. Is there now a case for some form of self regulation and would that even work?

I doubt Geo-Fence would work as well as all other GPS option, lots of obstruction and radio noise in cities.

I'm not as upset about this as some of the rest of you seem to be. Sure it was a very careless an thoughtless action on the part of the operator, but realisitically shouldn't we almost expect this to happen? Afterall, the growthrate of this hobby is large and every day there are more and more people flying planes, quads, etc. Considering that almost all of us drive an automobile (statistically speaking) which arguably has an equal or greater ability to mame and kill, I figure this is simply a sign of the times. Consider the thought that every day you pass by countless people on the road that could instantly kill you just by THEM having a moment where they aren't concentrated. Anyhow, I'm not trying to provoke, just hoping it is all taken with a grain of salt.
Doc hicks, what you are proposing is regulation and ruling, when all that is needed is advice and hints.
perhaps a better solution as i said previously,Make anyone who uses any software that enables RC flight to complete a 5 min wizard that warns of the dangers and inappropriate behaviors and quizzes to make sure they know
and who is to edit the code?, who is to update it, i can see abuse as hackers block everywhere or diable the block.
Our environment is too rapidly hanging to impose these sorts of limits, i mean obvious areas could be blacked liek air bases, airports etc but cities ect should not be.
There is helping the newbies and there is creatin huge barriers to entry, i started this whole warning idea but then people are taking it to far.
You idea to closely falls into the the fuddy duddies who complain about back in their day, they had to build their models out of balsa and now anyone can just fly in their area with foam etc
limiting people simply because they bought rather than built is ludicrous, how do you think everyone gets into the hobby now adays, they buy a toy version find it coll but limited so build one.
you idea would entirely kill the toy market and entry hobby grade models
