ArduCopter in action: Testing the QuadCopter (HIL mode) on X-Plane v9
Here a video a the ArduMega board (2560 or 1280) with the firmware ArduCopter v2.1.1b (JLN update for X-Plane) connected on the X-Plane simulator throught the APM Planner in HIL mode. The QuadCopter QRO has been modelized for X-Plane v9.0 (or greater) so as get a closest replication of a true QuadCopter UAV.
This is a very good method for testing all the features of the ArduCopter firmware. For conducting a such test, only an ArduMega board (APM1280, APM2560, APM2) is used, no IMU shield or sensor are required here...
Setup:
- Receiver: Turnigy 9X8C v2 connected to the APM board
- Transmitter: Turnigy 9x
- APM planner v1.1.1x
- ArduMega board (APM v1 or APM v2)
- firmware ArduCopter v2.x.x + the JLN mod for X-Plane
- Software: X-Plane v9 or greater
- QRO_X: the quadcopter model (by JLN) for X-Plane

Here a video of a test flight in HIL mode on X-Plane v9.70 of the firmware ArduCopter v2.1.1 R6.
This is a test about the LOITER mode (1 turn) around a target during a full autonomous flight under a flight plan (AUTO mode). The take off and the landing is also done automatically.

Here a short test video of the ACRO and LOITER mode of the firmware ArduCopter v2.1.1 r5b in HIL mode on X-Plane v9.70.

Dear Jean-Louis
This is an important development, could you make your work here a separate address all by itself e.g. Ellison's copter?
I think this is the first serious development that pushes the techs here into the operational realm. By 'operational' I mean if there is an organization flying quite a few UAVs in different locations for commercial purposes.

i do recollect Chris mentioning about changes to mapping between 9 and 10. Or esle would have to write a bit of hack to get the mapping right...
I recommend you to use the X-Plane v9.70 and not X-Plane v10 because the frame of datas sent by the APM planner seems not compatible with the X-Plane v10 and this can create some connexion problems.
Regards, Jean-Louis
Ordered x-plane 10 yesterday, it should work with that too right?
Thank you again.
This effort actually solves a huge problem for us. I was wondering if the support for Spektrum DX8 is easy to obtain or it is a major rework

This is awesome!
What about another version of arduino? Could it work on arduino duemilanove?
