APM 2 is an open source, Arduino-compatible, pro-quality autopilot. It is the most advanced IMU-based open source autopilot available today, and provides an entire UAV control system with scriptable missions with 3D waypoints, in-flight uploading of commands and powerful ground station software.
APM 2 supports any kind of of vehicle with a one-click change of code. Available code include ArduPlane (fixed wing), ArduCopter (rotary wing), ArduRover (ground vehicles) and more.
Everything you need to create an ArduPlane UAV:
* APM 2.5 autopilot with GPS ($179)
* [Optional] Telemetry kit ($75).
You'll also need a at least a five-channel RC radio setup, a soldering iron, a mini USB cable and of course something that flies! (We're partial to the SkyFun delta wing (right) and
Bixlee 2 powered glider (left) or its equivalents ourselves).

Note: ArduPilot Mega requires no programming, but it's open source and you're welcome to modify it if you'd like. If you are going to play with the code, you can use the free Arduino IDE to edit and upload the code to the ArduPilot board.
Comments
should I not have holes in the cockpit?
Especially ones that might change cabin pressure with airspeed. Hence sensor's true altitudue/air reading may not occur.
I have a usb size hole on side and two 'nostril' like holes on nose to cool the ESC.
Secondly, is this abs sensor used during STABILIZE or FBW mode? I would NOT have thought so.
Thanks for any advice (as I'm still trying to get to AUTO mode)
Sounds like you worked it out, but for others who may have trouble, here is my folder structure:
Thanx for the tip, finally got it all together. :)

(I'm looking for a solution to why the surfaces change significantly when I switch to other modes on the ground, when plane horizontal. This note may help but untried as yet)
The APM code picks up the stick position during initial setup (ground start) and uses these as the trim values.
Since the initialising is reasonably quick you need to take care that your control surfaces are in neutral/mid positions on the plane. This occurs before you can do any trimming with your radio. So you may need to repeat the power-up after the plane is trimmed in manual mode.
Please tell me if I'm wrong as this should go in the manual when I'm sure.
At same time check that you folder is all lowercase letters.
Thanks for taking the time to answer. And at the same time I want to encourage you and the rest of "the team" that are doing such a great job for the benefit of all of us.
I tried it all over again, creating a new directory c:\Arduino\libraries and unzipped the APM_Libraries.zip into it and unzipped the ArduPilotMega_1_0_1.zip into c:\Arduino
I made sure that the Arduino preferences is c:\Arduino\libraries but still gets the exact same error messages.
I beleive that this should be as basic as it gets, but I´m obviously doing something very wrong.
I´m looking for some assistance to what is probably a simple, but fatal mistake on my side..
Trying to compile the ArduPilotMega_1_0.pde I get these error messages. Funny thing is that when I first downloaded and installed the ArduPilotMega SW package and libraries, it managed to compile ONCE, but never again....
So I deleted the whole thing and started over again, but now it won´t compile even once..
What am I missing?

This puts the arduino ide in readonly mode allowing you to have the project open in eclipse for editing. when you switch back to arduino and click compile the ide reads the latest copy of the sketch project from disk
