wow that is a lot, have you done a range test on the ground yet?
I tested one of these, burns about 20W (about 1.5a and ~12.5v) gets hot, and I mean hot, very quickly, even with the fan - don't think about putting it in any time of enclosed space. Burns half as much power as the entire aircraft in cruise! lol
Wow 2 Watts on 5.8 GHz, I think that spells ILLEGAL.

Even a billion dollar project with an onboard nuclear poweplant has no X GW TX to send across our solarsystem and beyond. It's a matter of balance what can be reasonably carried and what you can do on the antenna and receiving side. Translated to copters it is pointless to put x W Transmitters (and illegal in many countries) on your copter and stick to those rubber antennas to get some range. The companies should produce a balanced, legal kit (or solution) of tx / rx (groundstation) at a reasonable price. That 2W 5.8GHZ stuff is simply making quick money. When going illegal on transmitters to gain range, then definitely not on outputpower but on the frequency in the first place.
Voyager 1: LOL! 23 watts with a high gain 3.6 m dia parabolic antenna, line of sight, nuclear power, low data rate, and a 1 billion dollars spent since 1977 are a bit beyond my flight envelope.
Agreed, remarkable engineering.
With 40W TX power and 70m parabolic tracking antennas you can achiever 1,4 kbit/s from the most remote edge of our solar system. Demonstrated with 1975 technology by Voyager 1 & 2. When talking about range it's mainly a talk about frequency and antennas....
My VTQ 2W amplifier consume 16A on 12V source for 2W output power.

by replacing omni antenna with a sector antenna (i.e. to beam only downwards) one would achieve the same result with half of an input power. Do the same on the GCS and you'll' boost efficiency by 4 times. Introduce parabolic dish to the GCS plus the aircract tracking and you'll double the RX sensitivity. Endless possibilities without reducing the flight duration.
R, in Europe at least the best alternative for long range FPV is 1.3/2.4ghz video and 433mhz R/C control.
