As long as Chris Anderson is championing the cause, I hope the governments stay out of our hair, regarding hobby drones. I sure hate to see the kind of restrictions they can potentially apply that could just kill all our fun.
Anything can be used by bad people to do harm. Remember the shoe and underwear bombers? Will they put heavy restrictions on what kind of underwear and shoes are allowed on airplanes?
It seems that there is always the sensationalize a story to make it more ..... palatable, hard hitting, whatever. The Media always have been and always will be liars of the highest order. If it is something that is exciting, OK but then if it is political or has a parallel with an agenda then it may be reported or it may not. A case in point is "Fast & Furious" which most news agencies refused to cover with the exception of CBS broke the story and FOX reluctantly followed. The others refused and only recently when it became obvious it wasn't going to go away they started covering it .... sort of.
Believe me, if the agenda of the day decides to make auto-piloted drones with FPV a danger ... whether real or imagined, they will make it difficult or impossible to continue researching and improvising for our sport. They do it all the time and they will do it to us if they decide to. Just saying.....

We are considering such a move for our non-profit Metanomy and for our start-up that will be building stuff for sUAS community.
As for what do you need it for? I would like to see more coverage of people doing good things with tech, but it probably does not get the same ratings. E.g. We (Metanomy) are sponsoring Moses in Kenya who wants to see if he can use this tech for things like wildlife monitoring. http://www.metanomy.org/ We are still in the early stages, but we want him to tell his story as it unfolds - From learning to fly, to testing some assumptions about DIYDrones type tech that might be "good enough" to help out in certain use cases.

The answer to "why do people buy these" should have been: "I don't the same reason people cars with 400+hp, camping equipment. It's just something people enjoy doing, but doesn't necessarily have any good practical purpose."
ahahaha great, i'm creating simple script now for the documentary , so every one has guide on the video. I'll post it here in few days. For others who intrested to share your uavs story drop me a message :)

totally agree with you mike, so why dont we put this idea to action. If every one of us sending video about ther uavs helping other then stich it together, add comments, from member of this group, and close it with beutiful music and aerial video i think that would be great video. Upload it on youtube an hope that would be an introduction for people about uavs. (not drones)
I do some documentaries here, so know little bout video editing.And happily be the first volunteer :)

I have to admit you hit the nail on its head. The association folks make in the mind is aquired taste, we have to thank governments for creating this association. Unfortunately we will have an uphil battle in our hands, thankfully we could count a few among us who are media saavy ( guys u know who u are :))
Hopefully over time UAV's would be seen more as a peaceful tool than anything else.

It may be a lot easier to look at using different words... there is a huge difference between what we build and the 13 ton remotely piloted military aircraft, yet we talk about both as UAVs and drones. They are about as similar as a scale model fire engine that can pump water and has working lights, compared to a 60 ton army tank with reactive armor and 90mm sabo rounds.
The only thing that is really wrong with that comparison is that the scale model fire engine is not useful, like our UAVs, which can be used for better crop management, to help during disasters and accidents, to film weddings and national geographic specials, to support forestry service surveys, to help find lost and injured people or animals, to track down wild hogs that are destroying the ecology, and so much more.
Maybe rather than worry about the negative associations or names, we can all make projects and videos that highlight some helpful benefits and just let the videos and demonstrations speak for themselves? "The public" and masses of people act in silly ways, but individual people are pretty smart. Show them the good things you are doing, and laugh at the hollywood movies plots that break the laws of physics, and they get it.
You don't have to influence the whole world, and all the masses of people. Just let one person at a time see the helpful things that small UAVs bring. And like other airplanes, people will accept them like they accept the millions of civilian flights around the world every week, and not jump to think of bombers and fighter jets. Only our UAVs don't quite have the same carbon footprint, so that is more people we can make happy.
