  • As  a general average the kerf numbers seems to be right about 0.2mm (20 times greater than their required line width.  I think it would be much easier to work with that line width (weight) than the recommended size.  I'm impressed that they can cut such a fine line and that is relatively constant over depth and material variations.
  • Ponoko quantifies their laser cutter kerf on different materials and thicknesses, below (0.20mm for 3mm acrylic).

  • Surely the laser has a fine cutting width but is it really 0.01mm???  This seems too small, I priced out a few designs but haven't followed through with one yet.  I did my designs in Inkscape (the only free supported program) and found that having to get the lines to 0,0,255 (Blue) and 0.01mm made the lines difficult to see on the screen when zoomed out to see the whole panel even on the smaller P1 panel size.  if they allowed a larger line width it would be easier to check drawings and see details without having to zoom in to make the lines thick enough to see.  I assume that no matter what the line thickness is they would cut don the center any way and the process seems to burn/char the edges of many materials anyway so I can't believe the 0.01mm spec.

Points are smaller than mm, so that's fine. The line just has to be 0.01mm or smaller, which my files were. Ponoko just wants to the lines to be small enough for the laser to make one pass, not try to carve out a channel with multiple passes.
  • When I downloaded them they said 0.01pt, not 0,01mm. I think you may had your document defaults wrong. Now they are 0.01mm for sure, something like 0.028pt.

Ivan, which files did I get the line widths wrong on? Ponoko accepted all of them, which usually means that they're right (0.01mm)

Nice, not bad, $45 shipped to me in Canada... will keep that in mind if I need it.  would have been nice to order it all in black except the motor mounts for illumination... :)
  • Its ponoKo not ponoco.
  • Just ordered mine...nice and easy.
  • AWESOME. Nice work. Already did this service with the upper rings, and it came out well.
