About Me:

I'm a mechanical engineer, which is a convenient excuse when I write bad code.

Please tell us a bit about your UAV interest

My first autonomous vehicle was a rover built as a ground entry to the 2011 SparkFun AVC. I now have a quadcopter too.

John Leichty commented on Ben's blog post Introducing the Nomad (working title)
"Ben, very cool!  The design and parts look great.
Have you looked into using the Pololu motors with the shaft protruding from the rear? It allows you to put an encoder on the back of the motor (and thus get wheel odometry data)."

John Leichty commented on Chris Anderson's blog post ESA does another copter-rover drop, this time with awesomely over-the-top music
"Actually, copters can work on Mars, although a conventional rover payload would be tough. See section 3.1 here for a proposed effort:https://www-robotics.jpl.nasa.gov/publications/Richard_Volpe/isaira..."

John Leichty commented on Bot Thoughts's blog post AVC 2013 info has been posted
"Jason, when I read through the rules I thought that too, but I think it's just some sub-optimal wording. I really hope that radios are allowed for taking over control."

John Leichty commented on Jack Crossfire's blog post Tablets, copters, & extreme precision
"Jack, I've been following your posts for some time, awesome work! I've been wanting to do a homebrew active target tracker for some time, and you seem to have done it. Do you have any measurements of what kind of precision/accuracy/workspace you can…"

John Leichty commented on Randy's blog post Hokuyo Laser Range Finder needs a home
"I periodically lust after one of these for my RC car. They're the cheapest (still expensive) 2D LIDAR system out there (besides the Neato Robotics vacuum).

It's a RS-232 interface and thus will require level converters to communicate with the APM.…"

John Leichty commented on PX4's blog post Introducing the PX4 autopilot system
"Congratulations, incredible work! I think this is just about everything one could ask for from a microcontroller-powered autopilot. (And great documentation too!)

I notice that on the wiring page, there is a guide for connecting the STM32F4…"

John Leichty commented on Chris Anderson's blog post Balloon-launched and disposable UAVs
"It's my understanding that this sort of thing isn't permissible without a Certificate of Authorization from the FAA (and good luck getting one). That's unfortunate as this sort of thing is interesting and very doable on an amateur budget."
