T3

How about reviving T3 contest?

Must use only free processing tools.

Minimal distance to takeoff 1km or a mile. Must follow the plane and maintain visual contact as per actual laws. Electric winged machines only. Extra points for motor-off gliding over target.

  • Hey, this is a great idea by brilliant http://diydrones.com/profile/KrzysztofBosak but I am an admin of my3dscanner.com and I would be opposed to pretty much useless projects of scanning big chuncks of a terrain. Please tell me how usefull are they?

"Photo mapping of the "compound of evil" (or your car xD)"

The car must be without a windshield ;-)

I have proposed a task when 50% of the job is processing. Why are you adding quad accuracy requirement? To scare a quad that is poorly navigating but brings stable photos?

It looks completely unrelated to the mission. You cannot enter the doors with sub 20cm accuracy and for photomapping, it can be anything depends on what and how you process it.

  • T3 has already started again don't forget. Round 1 was to use HIL to replicate the Trappy flight safely (I couldn't even get my plane to start in the right place).

OK we are fleshing out a better idea of what is needed now.
Photo mapping of the "compound of evil" (or your car xD)
Use free software to produce a 3D mapped version of the location
    Bonuses:
    1000m journey to target
    1000m return journey to home

    Plane - auto takeoff(1), auto landing(4)
Heli/Quad - waypoint accuracy during flight (for every metre under 5 metres you are to each waypoint for each photo you get a point. So 1m accuracy over all waypoints means 4 points for each then divide the total by the number of waypoints so bonus is still 5)
  • Yes, please bring back T3, it's one of the key motivators in getting my AP in the air!  I don't think this suggestion is too difficult, as long as the software is accessible to everyone and (fairly) easy to use, otherwise perhaps we just submit our source files, and there could be a group effort among those with the skills to produce the 3D models.

  • Hi, I think the task of "open source 3d reconstruction" is very interesting and has not yet been demonstrated to be straight forward... Especialy that some key parts of the process are not open sourced at all (Bundler/Photosynth)..

So probably it´s a little bit too much to have a defined mission with distances and so on plus the 3d part. As said it comes close to EMAV and only few get close to perform well there. At first not everybody has a place to fly such a mission.

To get as many participants in the contest, it should be able to be performed by one amateur alone (as the egg drop, altitude record...). Perhaps to start the "season" let´s begin with an easy task to warm up? Mapping a field of predifined size and deliver a stitch. Bonus for full autonomy, 3D terrain model, integration to map?? This task could also attract the fixed wings and copters...

Hope to fly T3 soon :-)

  • @Alex, funny how that question doesn't get answered ehn? Look at the earlier post by Krzys about PhotoSynth and you will see my comment there about a PhotoSynth toolkit and also the marvellous products from AGISoft.

  • I am loving this more and more. As driving to stay within visual range is rather demanding especially of younger entrants might I suggest a 1000m trip to the target location so VLOS can be maintained. This would mean 2000m are traveled by the airframe as well as mapping the "compound".

A google search link for appropriate software might help.

What software did  you use to create your 3d map, and was it 'free' software?
