Information taked from the webpage of dutch ministry of defense.

It basically says that only aircrafts that carry people (regular air traffic), people inside are allowed to make pictures,
and also military aircrafts are excepted from the rule. Any other type of aircraft  (including a drone) needs to have
permit to be able to make pictures or record videos over Dutch territories from the sky.

  • Hi all,

You can read a model of the permit of Dutch ministry of defense here:

  • There's a form here:

Aanvraagformulier Luchtopnamevergunning - Ministerie van Defensie

It lists a year long license as an option for businesses that are registered as "Photography" (no idea what that means exactly.. ) I heard about people getting a reply rather quickly.

  • Any details on that Fabien?

  • Seems like you can apply for a (free) license as a hobbyist, but it has to be renewed every 4 weeks.

  • yes, it is an old law, completely obsolete now. But the Netherlands is knows only 1 thing, and that is to make things illegal. This law was made to protect military secrets, but all the army bases are visible on Bing-maps. If you do soem creative zooming, you can even tell how many F16s the airbase Volkel has.

  • You are right, it IS quite interesting! I am curious how they check this anyway, I never hear of anyone being charged for taking pictures by plane, drone or kite.

  • Really? In Dubai they dont seem to have a problem with it. Until now i did not experience any problems.
  • It's true that it's not news, but still interesting.

Also it's interesting because The Netherlands are one of the countries of the world with more "hidden" areas in Google Maps.

  • Radio controlled aircrafts are strictly prohibited here in Bahrain. They even snatch the cheapos in customs.

  • This is not really news though, it is a law from 1959.
