"eBumper" sense-and-avoid add-on for drones

3689595439?profile=original

The "eBumper incorporates acoustic and vision sensors as inspired by insects to enable safe flight operations". When it senses obstacles it takes over control of the vehicle and moves away to a safe distance. It will be available first for the DJI Phantom and then for other vehicles. No pricing yet given.

  • Spinning mirror on there lower cost TOF sensors works good as well, as that is all a TIM551 is :)

  • $900 gets you 10+m, cm resolution, inside and out, 270 deg.... it's a very nice point cloud TBH

  • I'd assume that laser is considerably more expensive then the sonars though? It'd be really nice to see this technology fall into the same sort of price range as the various 3DR components for example, from a hobbyist's perspective anyway ;)

  • Pointed up and down, and yes, every 60 deg. Specific project for a single client, so it's IP.

Again, managing 8 sensors, and determining noise from true, is not simple.

Just use a laser, it's a lot less work, and will give you considerably better results :)

  • @Dan

Are the sonars around the rim of the top part of the tower ? I think i can make out 6 sonars every 60deg or so. Is that right ? Are there any pointing down ?

  • We have a sonic version, but our new drone with a SICK TIM551 laser range finder is very sweet.

The update rate with sonic's is just too slow, we can on hold about +/- 10" with turbulence. Our last test using laser, we are holding +/- 2".

In both cases we have a separate micro controller running the sensors, and commanding the APM / Pixhawk via PPM.

  • Anybody know about potential integration into Pixhawk or APM????   I see many, many uses for this.

  • Use Lightware's laser rangfinder - SF02 - 40meters range off of almost any surface, except dead black and reflective flat surfaces ( water with ripples is fine) Ultrasound is useless..
    Nampilot

PS - re some earlier comment - I would rather chase Helistorm's quad ( the existence  of quads and the like is still in question..) with a flock of Woodpeckers than the other way around..

  • Anyway i thought most sonars have a range of under 7ish meters anyway. Wasnt that the range for the sonars 3dr used to sell the other year ?

If your moving with a bit of speed, and your system sees a brick wall, 7m is not going to be enuff to stop.

  • Well in this case both parties have mentioned they have a s-a-a but neither has shown one in action. WOuld be an interesting show.
