How to Get APM/Pixhawk telemetry on your taranis!

So just as with all my tutorials, This is simplifying the process of doing whatever it is aimed at.

Very often you will find tutorials on how to do things but they are poorly explained or make assumptions on what you know already,
I try to make the tutorial "for Dummies" put everything in to answer every question.
So here we go!

IF you would like one pre made and programmed

Search the following in ebay:

Telemetry adapter for APM to smartport

and simply plug and play or you can build one yourself in which case you will need a few things, Most importantly a Teensy 3.1, A servo lead and a Telemetry Plug.

you will need the above and a Soldering Iron and shrink wrap if you want to make things tidy.

Get your teensy and solder on the plugs

The servo plug is soldered on the same side as the Micro USB,

Red wire to the hole rite of the Micro USB.
Black to the hole left of the USB (GND)
white to the hole two down from the black (1)

On the telemetry side you solder the Yellow wire ( Number 2 on the plug to hole 9)

The green or blue wire depending on your cable (no 3 on the plug, goes to 10)

The black wire (5 on the plug, goes to the center hole on the back of the teensy.

Now you need to program it:

To do this you need arduino, i will let you download that just google arduino installer.

Once downloaded you will need to download the teensy installer

pick the one appropriate for your operating system.

once downloaded just run the installer.

You now have the teensy software for your computer, now you will need to copy the library folder contents into the Arduino library folder which is in

C:\Program Files (x86)\Arduino\libraries or where ever you told arduino to install.          

The library folder is in this zip MavLink_FrSkySPort_1.2%20%281%29.zip  

Now that all this is done you will want to copy the other folder in the zip file and extract it to your desktop, then open MavLink_FrSkySPort in arduino, it should just open not ask to be put in a folder, if it does, you did something wrong

Now that it is ready in arduino, go to tools and them select board and choose the teensy 3.1.

Then click upload3689581468?profile=original

This window will appear when you do , press the reset button on your teensy and it will start uploading.

It takes only seconds and that is it!

Now you plug it into the apm and SBUS.

And power it up using a UBEC , Do not use USB as it will not work.

The teensy will blink red while the APM initializes which can be up to 10s.

IT should then start blinking very fast, this indicates it is communicating.

If it continues to blink it means your APM is operating above 5v or it is not connected correctly,

IF it still blinks then your APM regulator might be blown. get a multimeter and check it out.

Now to get this telemetry on the taranis is simple, power on the taranis and when at the home screen press menu.

Then long press page twice to get to telemetry, scroll down to page two and change the - - - to each telemetry choice.

    Well my above question was answer in your above post! the gps data WILL show up in the T1 Taranis data field but it only makes sense if the radio is set to display in metric. 8 sats will show up as 83 as in 8 sats 3D lock. If the radio is set to imperial the numbers don't make sense. COOL! Because that really was the last piece of the pusszle so as to not really feeling the need for a separate GCS before I fly. All the important data is now on my TX. 

  • Just got this http://www.droneshop.biz/taranis-mavlink-apm-pixhawk-telemetry-adap... which I think is just the teesny board pre configured for the taranis. However..... very disappointed I cannot get gps data such as sat count and hdop. I don't see it in the field options on the open TX firmware on my Taranis. Odd because the above link shows a short video of him doing that very thing. Anybody have any thoughts on this I'd appreciate it.

  • I am using Dragon Link and sending the RSSI data from that to APM. I can see it in MP and in the OSD. But I would also like it to appear on Taranis for times when I may not be using a monitor and for alarm purposes. At present that data is in Mavlink but is not one of the items that is dealt with by this Teensy solution.

  • Built one last month and put it on my 3DR Quad.  Using the X8R receiver and Pixhawk.  Great project and good instructions.  One thing to watch for is that the code is expecting to use metric values.  If your Taranis is set for imperial values you may get some odd numbers.

    When using a X8R receiver that data is already sent back to the Taranis. 

    Are you connecting the RSSI port on the X8R receiver to the PixHawk? If yes to what pin and what are the parameters you've changed on the PixHawk?

  • Is there a way to get the receiver RSSI (rxrssi in Mision Planner) added to the list of data transferred to Taranis please?

    Good to know that on the Pixhawk the two telemetry ports can be used directly.

    So about the power supply of the Teensy the above wiring diagram is ok , it just take the power from the receiver.

  • Oh.

    From what I've learned the question of powering the Teensy is related with an advise to cut a track on the Teensy board so that you want have problems (burned board) when plugging power via USB and other ways of powering the Teensy.

    When I need to reprogram the Teensy I prefer to disconnect everything except the USB cable, so in this case, problems avoided.
