Introducing the New 3DR Radio

We’re pleased to announce our new 3DR Radio. Featuring interchangeable air and ground modules (both with native USB connectors), Android tablet compatibility, and a protective case, our new radio delivers unparalleled ease of use for viewing in-flight data, changing missions on the fly, and tuning.

Quite a bit of work went into the new radio design. Our first version was simply a carrier board for the radio module, providing a power supply, an antenna connector and a way to connect to the autopilot or the computer. Our new radio provides an EMI shield over the radio module, EMI filtering chips on all power and signal lines, USB and autopilot connectivity options on the same board, and an enclosure for protection and easy mounting.

Each Telemetry Kit comes with two modules, two antennas, and cables to connect to Pixhawk, APM, PX4, laptop, and Android tablet/phones.

    Hugues, guess you weren't around when our only choice was Xbees at... $400 for a set, was it?

    So I ask: Expensive compared to what?

    RFD900s also have milliwatts. One thousand of them to be exact.

    99 dollars? Doesn't seem to expensive if thats what it is. I would like to see a higher end version. I am going to buy some RF900s and be done with the milliwatt stuff.

    I wished 3DR would reduce the price. These are too expensive.

    Just to add to Tom's comment regarding fragile connectors, I agree that more robust connectors for radio and 3DR Ublox GPS would be welcome.

    Especially whilst in build/prototype phases of both hardware and firmware, where hardware often has to be disconnected or relocated, each time I remove these tiny connectors makes me nervous!

    Even a temporary "bridging" cable of sturdier stuff used in these build phases would be great.

    I find the DF13 connectors too fragile. Is there an adapter to go from the DF13 connector to a rc pin type connector like the older version of the radio? I know there is a cable adapter but I am looking for something that will not break at the radio.

    When will 3DR sell a range of antennas for their radios as a convenience ? 

    Also why doesnt 3DR sell a kit that includes shielding for existing owners, housing & cable without investing in a completely new radio.
