ScanEagle model kit with 63" wingspan

Found by Gary Mortimer over at the AttoPilot user forum: a fiberglass model kit of the ScanEagle UAV. Unfortunately, the supplier is out of stock. More info and pics in this RC Groups thread. Before you get your hopes up, note the speculation there that Boeing (owner of the real ScanEagle) may have put the kibosh on this unauthorized reproduction.

  • I'm all about the drone look. So it shouldn't be that hard. I like the petite duc. I found it years ago when checking out this rc plane that looked like a longEZ called the Griffin. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eepe0Eh5EXY&feature=player_embedded Sorry about the gay music.

Actually, the Arado E 381 would be ideal modified as a twin boom model.

It looks as though you may have your hands full designing suitable openings for air intake converting from the rocket to ducted fan.
  • Yeah, I love the scan eagle. Another design I want to put into flight is the Arado E.381

    Here is a link: http://www.luft46.com/arado/are381.html

    I would order one too!
  • Paul,
I built a Lovesong sailplane about 20 yrs ago that had full house controls including ailerons, flaps, total reflex of the trailing edge and rudder coupled to ailerons. You wouldn't believe the plumbing in that thing to mechanically control and mix all the control surfaces from servos in the fuselage! Absolutely no electronic mixing. Now I'm completely spoiled with small, strong servos and computer radios.

"I wonder how hard it is to fly the Scan Eagle since it appears to really be a flying wing with ailerons only?"

Probably not too hard at all. The control surfaces would be refered to as elevons, or a combination of elevator and ailerons. Years ago I built the Simitar, which was basically a flying wing and somewhat similar to the Scan Eagle in configuration, only the Simitar is a tractor while the Scan Eagle is a pusher. It was extremely easy, and fun, to fly! At the time we didn't have programmable radios, so the aileron servo was mounted on a sliding tray, which was controlled by the elevator servo. Pushing and pulling the tray by the elevator servo would make both control surfaces go up or down at the same time, i.e. act as an elevator control surface.

  • I can make them as well out of composite if anyone interested. I'm in Australia.
  • It's easy to build and it flies fine with elevon or you can have separate ailerons with inboard elevators (Scan Eagle's config) and winglets is a must.

This type on design does have small CG range which make payload arrangment a bit tricky when you want to make changes.
  • What would people want? just the fuselage? How much bigger? Has anyone any good 3d photos of the craft? Remember I am in the UK so if anyone wanted it America you would have to consider postage........
