A few weeks ago I posted a short write up on a compact, autonomous drone I was helping to develop:

We've put together some video footage, kind of a summary and current status of the project.  If you have any comments, suggestions or just want to stay informed about the drone please email us at BackcountryDrones@gmail.com

  • Excellent work and design!

  • This is fantastic. Outstanding work.
Have you considered creating a quadcopter that is equally compact/durable/collapsible?
  • I really love this project.... have you guys considered the use of Lisa/s Autopilot? I think will be the best for this platform.

  • Love it well done real innovation

  • Oh wait could this spell the end of mutltirotors and rise of co-axial.  Hmmmm...

  • Awesome, i like the size and simplicity.  Looks like something it could fit perfectly on my mountain bike bottle cage as i travel cross country.  I don't have to carry my quads in my back packs soon.   Looking forward to see it in production. :)

  • You could probably hack a Blade MCX to use folding blades to get a smaller form factor.

  • Thanks John, on a similar note, this drone should be more than capable of sending text messages (though not currently incorporated).  The thinking was if you get into a sticky situation in a canyon or valley it could be deployed to broadcast your GPS coordinates to authories, friends and family.  Also, really like the solar charging concept.

  • Excellent concept! This can also be used as a beacon if you install high intensity LEDs on it. Especiall helpful if it is capable of solar charging.

  • Very Cool.
