  • @Dwgsparky, swept flying wings will always tend to stall at the wing tip first and having inboard elevons only exacerbates this problem towards high AoA.  It's pretty much the limiting characteristic for maximum lift (or CLmax) which dictates the wing loading for a given landing speed.  If you keep them light you can mask the issue to some degree but it will limit the payload.

  • JB,

    http://www.banggood.com/Skywalker-X5-Pro-1280mm-Wingspan-EPO-FPV-Fl...

290 $ in PNP , but no name components.

I am currently interested in swarm of planes for large area mapping, which mean low price for each individual. And this one seems to be a candidate if it fly well enough.

  • Thx Pascal.

Anyone have any idea on the price and where it's on sale/to be released?

  • @Jackson, According to that Patent, the last legal action which was effective 2014 10 10 is Deemed to be Withdrawn. I looked it up and basically they didn't pay some fee's so the patent is no longer protected. Please correct me if I am wrong, but, if what my research stated is correct, this patent should be no issue for others to use due to that.

    @Andrew

Not to be defensive of this aircraft as I have not tried it yet but my comment above regarding the tip stalling of the old X5 is that at low speed (takeoff/landing ) the downgoing elevon would create more drag than the upgoing elevon and so cause adverse yaw and the inevitable crash. In all my X5s this is completely cured by limiting the downgoing elevon to 6mm and allowing the upgoing elevon to reach 18mm at full deflection. possibly the short span Elevons will have a similar effect and maintain the good wingtip airflow?

  • The elevons are not in the right place.  If you're going to run with part-span elevons on a flying wing, they should be outboard, not inboard like this example.  That's one of the primary reasons for "tip stalling"  (I hate that term...)

Increasing negative elevon deflection should have the effect of increasing wing washout, which is one mechanism for wing stability.  The other is with the reflex effect this creates, but this is inefficient because the CLmax of the aerofoil section plummets as you increase reflex just as you're actually wanting more CL...

  • senseFly (acquired by Parrot)  has owned the patent of detachable wings mechanism.  https://www.google.com/patents/EP2716543A1?cl=en&hl=en

    Hi

I have been using the older version of the X5 for a long time, this looks good and usable.

Have the new wingtips solved the launching problems of tip stalling unless the speed is high?

Is a specific servo needed for the Elevons to fit the removable link?

flying video will be good to see??

Where do I get one from and the cost please.

    Thank you

  • Jb,

Pics from RCgroup, they have a Parrot Ebee / Disco similar mounting for servos.

  • Hi Ellen

I have a collection of the old X5's but this looks much better.

How do the elevens work with the servo's mounted on the fuselage side? Do you have any detail photos on how this works?

Also where can this be purchased and how much does it cost?
