Unboxing the Feiyu FY-3ZT IMU autopilot

As promised ("take one for the team") I bought one of the Feiyu FY-3ZT autopilots from Hooks at FPVFlying.com, and it arrived today.

I haven't had a chance to test it (the software only runs on Windows XP right now, and I don't have any XP boxes), but here are the unboxing photos:

The instructions don't look too bad for a Chinese product.

Here are the parts:

--The three boxes in the middle are the (top) IMU, (middle) Remote Adapter and (bottom) Autopilot controller. Only the IMU and the Autopilot go in the plane. The Remote Adapter is for the ground station.

--Hooks also threw in a 433mhz 500 mW long range modem (black modules at left). I have no idea if they're legal in the US!

--There is also an OSD module (FY-OSD); I'm not sure if that's part of the basic kit or Hooks just being generous to me again.

--The GPS module is one of those very small Locosys deals (MC-1513). I'm not a huge Locosys fan, but we'll see how this performs.

--And the thing with the two red Deans plugs looks like a power/current monitor.

--All the rest is all the necessary cables, antennas and mounting bits.

Of course I took the boxes apart. Each one has an AMR7 processor. The IMU has the usual 3-axis accelerometer, a 2-axis gyro and a 1-axis yaw gyro. The controller board has a absolute pressure sensor. All the markings on the chips are obscured with black varnish so I don't know what kind they are.

I've got to fly off to Europe again tomorrow (Paris this time), so I won't get a chance to start testing until next week.

David, how do you know those are the chips the system uses? You copy and pasted Gary's assertion from this RCG thread, but I have these boards and they don't appear to be those chips.

Accusing someone of piracy is a serious accusation. The RCG crowd seem to be willing to do that without evidence, but we hold higher standards here.

  • Oh yeah, he made a footprint for the HMC mag as well and looks like he decided not to place it.
  • > Belive me this system is not a copy!

Here are the chips that system uses:

    IDG-500
    ISZ-500
    ST Accel 344

Please tell the long and elaborate back story, it would be fun to hear.
  • Hi Hooks, I bought one so am very interested in any background story. Please post anyway, in modules if necessary, like utube movies!

New GS Software now Windows Vista compatible.

  • 433MHz is legal if you have an FCC Amateur Radio Technician Class license. Amateur Radio bands are not for commercial use. Hope that helps!

No no it's no problem! It's just that I have to hear about copy shit every day. Belive me this system is not a copy! it has a great story, but would be too long to post.

    :-) Dont worry be happy.

@Hooks... did I say something wrong?... I didn't mean to come off as a smart a$$ or anything.

Yes Chris! you are right sorry for not clarifying.

    Standard Commercial kit:
    - FY AHRS
    - FY3zt Autopilot
    - FY3zt Controller for GS
    - GPS 10hz (first version was with Ublox GPS)
    - FY data link 2.4 Ghz 100 mW more or less same range as some Radio controler. Manual says up to 4 km but..
    - All wire for perfect setup PnP
    _______________________________________________________________________

And yes it's possible to upgrade to a stronger data link and FY-OSD

433 Mhz UHF 500 mW - Same frq as LRS RC controller uses. (HAM licence) 5-7 km optimal over 10 km.
The FY-OSD is also a PnP solution for the AP with some of the same info you have on the GS. The OSD and current sensor is an upgrade for the system, because you have all the same info on the GS software, it's nice to have, but not a must.

BTW a new version of the GS software should be ready in August (compatible with Vista and 7)

Hooks, could you clarify what's in the $1,195 commercial kit? I know the radio modems I got are not the same as the commercial ones, but is the OSD and current/voltage sensor that I got part of the standard kit?
