Jordi and I have been hard at work at some projects over the past couple weeks, which has led to some light posting. My project is my book launch (FREE: The Future of a Radical Price), for which I've been on book tour for the past two weeks and will be for the next two weeks, too. Press stops have included NPR's Fresh Air show with Terry Gross and CNN, and will take me to The Colbert Report (yikes) and the Charlie Rose show over the next two weeks.
Jordi's project is still secret (and awesome! announcement in a few weeks, I hope) but in the meantime the good news is that he's now started making the XY and Z sensors and should have them for sale in the DIY Drones store in the next day or two.
Chris,
Oh please, please, please let us know when you are going to be on the Colbert Report. I for one will be sure to watch.
Best regards,
Bill Premerlani
Products, like the basic Ardupilot, that take time to evolve, no matter how good they are, are always quickly left by the wayside if something better comes along that doesn't cost much more.
The big problem with the Ardupilot is the necessary field calibration and the performance of the XY sensor under varying atmospheric conditions. Also, the user must attach two external items to the fuse that can become damaged in a crash.
The move to a totally enclosed IMU based Ardupilot only makes sense. Jordi and Chris have probably sold as many Ardupilots as they are going to sell, except for replacements/backups, as the UAV community is still relative small in the scheme of things.
Hey, great news, Chris and Jordi! There will be some pushing in the starting blocks for the sensors... By the way Chris, am I right not to expect your book price to be as radical as free? Where will it be possible to get it for us living abroad? Put it on DIYdrones' online store! Just saw there was a link... I'm bad.
Thanks for the update and all the best with the launch.
I eagerly await news on Jordi's secret project but I sincerely hope that it isn't a major hardware change (ArduinoMega based ardupilot or IMU)
I think the current hardware revision (and software) needs time to be adopted by the community and stabilise...
I'm sure I speak for the members when I say we appreciate all the hard work you and Jordi have put into the ArduPilot projects and all the additional troubleshooting and hand-holding.
It's a fantastic and ambitious dream you had for open-source budget APs and we've come along way with your help.
Thanks again, and good luck with the tour and the book.

It really is time to move on.
Just a thought.
