Wifi hacking with a radio control plane

Some guys have put together a radio contol airplane that can detect Wifi networks. I am posting this here since in there 'How do I put this together'-section, they mention diydrones because they use an ArduPilot: http://rabbit-hole.org/howto.html

  • Great to see you post about your project WhiteQueen. Again AWESOME work so far!

And again everyone here is a "hacker" dont stereotype others until you know the full picture! There are many others on here actively breaking actual laws using this hobby, worry about them giving UAV's a bad name.
  • Mr. Fletcher and Mr. Black,

I am very disappointed to see someone as intelligent as you both are, jump to immediate and inaccurate conclusions, without bothering to stop and ask any questions, or get any of the facts. If you had taken the time to do a little research, and/or asked a simple question you might have found the following information, which appears to be in direct conflict with the statements you have made:

One of the "criminal" builders of the airplane in question, is a long time hobbyist, previous owner of a R/C hobby shop, a member of the DIY Drones community, and has even posted photographs of the drone in question on these very forums.

Both individuals, involved with the project did an extensive amount of research on the laws and regulations prior to building this airplane, and have never flown above 400ft altitude, nor has the airplane ever been out of LOS. The airplane has only been flown at approved AMA flying fields, and both operators are insured by AMA.

The only networks "hacked" with this UAV are networks owned and operated by the owners of the vehicle.

Of course none of you were there when we were up at dawn, AMA memberships in hand, pouring over preflight checklists at the local RC airfield with one of the local RC flying club's senior instructor pilots at the controls. I find it a more than a little disingenuous to see the posts screaming about "Stupid Evil Hackers Want to Destroy My Hobby" while the very same blog contains posts entitled "Lesson: Don't fly planes over secure National Labs!"

So please take note, the members of rabbit-hole.org do not condone, nor do we participate in, any illegal or even questionable activities.

Just because it's different, doesn't make it illegal.

  • I agree with Jeremy on this one. Using backtrack 4 I can crack wireless passwords in minutes, and it's completely free software. It's not illegal until you do it without permission.
  • Basic wifi hacking has been done from rc planes before. There are UAV's that are up doing way more than this right now. Also a criminal is a criminal a hacker is not a criminal. Everyone on this board is by definition a hacker. On site vulnerability testing will benefit greatly from things like this. Just my .02
  • And thank you Dr. Dutchman for pointing this out. Crashing can be changed. Crashed can not (with out some glue) ;} ...........
  • Thanks Dr. Brown ...I mean Dr. Mike. I figured I wouldn't be alone on this.
  • Dear God.....

Thats just frightning...the propensity to royaly screw up is way too high..

    With Greg on this..

This cant end well for us!

    Mike.
  • Lets see a high speed, high wing loading out of balance plane being flown by obviously very armature RC fliers most likely flying non LOS over areas were you shouldn't be flying an RC plane anyway. These people are criminals and will ruin it for the rest of us. DIY store should figure out who they are and refuse to sell to them. They are hackers so they will get around this, but it's the thought that counts. To the FEDs that monitor this sight, investigate these ass holes and please don't take it out on the rest of us responsible fliers.
