Xiaomi Yi: Mobius Killer?

3689643689?profile=original

This week we see the release of a new low-cost action cam. Some think it is the next progression of the trusty Mobius camera. I am in the process of performing a written account of the camera and it's features, abilities and performance; also showing how to update the app & firmware to allow more features.

It's still early days to know if it can do USB-AV-out like the mobius, but it is looking promising.

Why this camera? It potentially has all the features of the Mobius camera, but with a wifi enabled, 1080p 60fps & 720p 120fps at a £50/$80USD price point. Crazy days huh?

If you would like to know more about my experiences they are written here: http://dalybulge.blogspot.co.uk/

Updates will be added as they arrive.

Many thanks

*Update*
It does have AV-out feature:

  • No more than SJ cam or AEE or something like it

  • @Kolin I forgot to mention, that also, we are flying through the gopro + gimbal on a Flight stablilised drone - the camera always stays level and we don't experience pitch & roll effects. The drone is usually also programmed to not extend roll & pitch beyond 20-40 degrees which prevents it from overturning.

  • @Kolin I fly using AV-out on both 808 & Mobius camera it works - zero crash. I am aware that it does not replace a decent fpv camera with the ability to change WDR (wide dynamic range) settings, but also in mini drone flying where weight is a factor sometimes both fpv & hd camera is not allowable because it is too much weight.

I think we all dream about a low-cost HD fpv camera, with WDR setting menu capability, Low-weight, small size, SDcard recording, HD fpv transmitter, HD IPS Monitor and all for under $50 but there is nothing available in this market. We should all be aware that we still are using cameras produced for security monitoring markets, and Consumer markets. There is no true "Drone Market" but for the maker/hobbyist altering this technology and selling at a markup with a logo attached.

  • AV out would be great feature. But I am afraid of video quality. By nature of design, it is not probable to have same quality as common 600tvl analog camera. I personally can not understand how so many pilots can fly through gopro live out. It is terrible quality, low resolution, low frame rate, and delayed.

  • @Kolin we have discovered that updating the camera firmware & android app enables an app button to enable 'AV-out'.

I attempted to connect to a transmitter using my mobius & gopro usb-av cable, however the Xiaomi camera uses Micro-usb and the mobius/gopro use Mini-usb so are incompatible. I'm heading out to buy a mini usb cable later so I can test the AV-out function.

I agree if it works with av-out it will be very good news.

  • Chris Norris: Wifi onboard does not affect my FPV or controls in any way. Flying on 868Mhz controls, 2.4GHz video.

If you use common 2.4GHz RC gear, you are affected.

I wonder if it has AV out and if so, if its as bad as gopro/mobius live out....

  • @Chris Yes, I think everybody turns wifi off just before they fly.

  • @Gary The Xiaomi cam is able to run on usb power allowing the battery to be removed. This makes the Xiaomi less weight than a Mobius is :)

Running Wifi though is going to either impinge on your FPV or Tx frequency (or both). Don't think that's a great idea myself

  • The Mobius is still a smaller, easier to incorporate, lighter camera so I don't think they will lose much ground.

On the other hand, my guess is they will take a bite out of the  low end GoPros.

At least once they get an English manual and actually start selling them here in the States at a good price.
