Develop standard, re-usable inexpensive solutions for IP-enabled always-on UAVs over cellular IP networks such as GPRS, 3G, 4G etc.
Primary goal: Telemetry over low cost cellular [achieved in testing]
Secondary goal: Bi-directional GCS/Telemetry over cellular IP [achieved in testing]
Tertiary goal: High speed IP for streaming IP video over cellular 3G/4G
STATUS: Bi-directional telemetry over cellular IP (UDP or TCP) is now working. It has been flown successfully while logging live telemetry to a GCS at home, several miles away [distance is really unlimited]. Currently working on improving code, more testing and broader hardware support.

Is it legal (in US, Europe, NZ and in Australia) to use cellular network from an airborne (manned or unmanned) platform?
Here is a statement I've found "According to current U.S. Federal Aviation Regulations, the use of cell phones on any kind of airborne platform, including private aircraft and even balloons (once the platform is airborne) is forbidden." (See also http://www.datasync.com/~rsf1/cell-air.htm)

Ah yes, Andy you're right about the USB slave. There are some that can be used if you have a newer Android but it's not a long term solution. http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/usb/host.html

No, DroneCell GPRS is not enough for both telemetry and video. It will be barely enough for telemetry and GPRS has very high latency.
I will be receiving a DroneCell for testing this week. I will start testing.
But if the DroneCell cannot do 3G/4G data, then it will not be suitable for anything more than telemetry. In that case, we should look at other solutions.
I also have a PhoneDrone board which I am testing for Android uplink.
Anyone have any other hardware they would like to test or share?

Most phones have a USB "slave", not a host, I think. The USB host would be a shield or small board to convert the TTL serial over USB. Yes, most have a camera too, but there may be other IP devices you might want to connect to the IP stack.
Strictly speaking, most smartphones has a camera and a usb host.
