About Me:

I am a licensed home Inspector in Illinois with experience as a private pilot. I also have a limited amount of experience building model RC planes and assembling electronics on PCBs.

Please tell us a bit about your UAV interest

I am looking to build a task-specific drone that is designed to do inspections of roofs without the need for ladders and actually walking the roof. I am looking for the optimum flight controls and camera sensor / lens that will make roof inspections safe and result in quality photographs that will be included in my inspection reports. Video capture is not a priority, and speed and distance traveled is also not part of my criteria.

I have read that some commercial multirotors have programmed routines to get off the ground and through ground effect up high enough to hover or fly.Is this real or just marketing hype? If this is really a feature, how many pilots find it useful?…

Has anyone got a schematic for a 'wired' control to increase the RPM of a motor (with prop attached) from 0 to 100%. I would prefer not to use a Tx/Rx/Flight Controller.Imagine if the motor were a light bulb, I am looking for the 'dimmer' circuit. I…

I am looking for a general understanding of how frame sizes are defined or described for hexacopters. When I see a hexacopter frame defined as 550 or 600 or other larger sizes, are there typical or common prop sizes that are used for those frames? Is…

John C Hansen replied to Drone-University.com's discussion Is full throttle better for the ESC then 75% or 50% throttle ?
"I am fascinated by the idea that an ESC used on a multirotor has a cooling system. Are you speaking of the prop wash? Where did you read this?"

"I think we are watching a time-distorted video. All of the video clips appear to me to be slowed down to leave the impression of ultra-smooth flight and landing. If we could be sure that the video is being shown at an accurate speed, this truly is…"

Are there any thrust stands that evaluate the lifting capabilities of the entire multirotor, and not just one motor/prop combination? Are the thrust characteristics such as efficiency of one motor the same when it is installed in the UAV with all…

John C Hansen replied to Johnny W. Brewer's discussion Question about dihedral.
"@Coastwise, No, nothing new. I wrote to the authors of the report I mentioned earlier. They had not evaluated the theoretical impact on the efficiency and flight time. I am preparing to do some of my own testing, but the design work is going slow…"

John C Hansen replied to Karan Chawla's discussion Thrust Vector
"Gary McCray,
I have searched the internet extensively on these two concepts of propeller dihedral and propeller twist, and I am unable to find any testing results or research that addresses the question of the impact on efficiency of either one.
The…"

John C Hansen replied to Johnny W. Brewer's discussion Question about dihedral.

When thinking through the three different designs, I am pondering what would be the desirable traits of a Tri, Quad, or Hex, if the overall flight capability of each were the same in terms of the same lift, endurance, and speed. Now I feel I should…

John C Hansen replied to Chad Frazer's discussion The Perfect Camera System - Can anyone do this?
"@Chad Frazer - I also wanted to write this post myself, so I am glad you did write it. I may have written a few less things than you did and a few of my needs are actually simpler than yours. One big example of the difference between us is that I…"

John C Hansen replied to Brad Hughey's discussion The Case for Large-Scale Electric Multicopters
"@ Rob Lefebvre - It is good to see an octocopter that has made the leap from paper to a real aircraft that flies.

The performance stats for this octocopter that you have mentioned here bring me to ask:
Why did you use motors that do not have higher…"

John C Hansen replied to Brad Hughey's discussion The Case for Large-Scale Electric Multicopters
"@Brad Hughey, I enjoy your input on this subject. As I read your last comment in this thread: "...the angle of attack range can be very limited.  This means that there's a very narrow range of speeds (advance ratios) in which such blades can…"

I see the note on page 13 that you refer to related to Open Source, and I believe it refers to the network that would integrate the different state-wide agencies in North Carolina. With various patents for the actual AVEA, I presume…"
