ArduCopter-3.2 beta testing

Warning #1: PX4/Pixhawk users upgrading from AC3.1.5 (or earlier) may need to re-do their compass and accelerometer calibration because AC3.2 also uses the backup compass and accels.  Pre-arm checks have been added to ensure this has been done.

Warning #2: on the APM2.x the logs must be downloaded using MAVlink instead of the terminal.

AC3.2-rc14 is now available for BetaTesters through the mission planner’s Beta Firmwares link.  The full release notes can be found in ReleaseNotes.txt and changes from -rc13 can be seen below.

     Feel free to raise issues found during testing on this discussion or in the new support section in the APM Forum.

     It’s a big release with “the onion” restructure and a bunch of new features (including these 57 closed items) so we need to re-test almost everything including all flight modes, all mission commands and all the new features.  Marco and I will be maintaining (and adding to) this testing list.  Issues reported will first be checked by Jonathan, Marco and I and then confirmed bugs/issues will be put on the github issues list (and then hopefully fixed).

     Thanks especially to the beta testers who put their copters at risk testing each release.  Enjoy!

Changes from 3.2-rc13
1) Safety Features:
     a) fail to arm if second gyro calibration fails (can be disabled with ARMING_CHECK)
2) Bug fixes:
    a) DCM-check to require one continuous second of bad heading before triggering LAND
    b) I2C bug that could lead to Pixhawk freezing up if I2C bus is noisy
    c) reset DCM and EKF gyro bias estimates after gyro calibration (DCM heading could drift after takeoff due to sudden change in gyro values)
    d) use primary GPS for LED status (instead of always using first GPS)

            • Just for my own information can you clarify which version of DP you are using? for instance I am using 2.8.6 rc2  You can see by looking on your droid device 'settings' then 'apps' the click on DP and you can see what version. Probably a way to do that right in DP as well?  

              also just fyi... I have made it a point to always fly in pos hold or loiter for a minute or so before engaging auto. This way I have some indication the gps and compass are in fact working togeather correctly.  This isn't required but... I do for safty. If you did that and it was fine then hit auto and it acted very badly that would be some indication it's not the compass or gps. I think... maybe somebody else can clarify my comment.

                It is maybe a good idea to loiter before - It was exactly what I did before - I have maybe 100 auto mission - and I used to do that. The fact is that these days my GPS (I have 3 quad + my sansumg) are very long to lock. I live in Uruguay, South America and few days ago, I got 10 sat in 30 seconds. I turn on a quad 15 min away and still waiting for 1 sat. And with my samsung, my location is moving very often. Very strange....

                • Some days I have noticed what I call a 'Bad gps day'. Just doesn't seem to get as many sats or a good hdop. You do want to keep an eye on your hdop not just your sat count. Under 2.00 is decent over 3.00 I wouldn't even consider auto. Sometimes you can have 7 sats but not a very good hdop so it's important to consider both. I think there is a setting in DP to replace the 2D /3D on the very top pf the screen to read hdop instead.

                  I have also sort of trained myself to quickly hit 'stabilize' and full throttle if it seems like it's flying in the wrong direction or something [ you said you hit 'Land' but this too requires gps ]. This way it's not using gps so it's not trying to do anything but stay horizontal. I have that mode on the 3 position switch on one of the far ends of the switch [ towards me ] so it's not in the middle position this way it's easy to quickly snap it into stabilize really fast without having to think about it much. However so far I've only really needed this once! But it saved my quad. Another thing I do is have an extremely bright LED on the front aiming forward this way if it's windy and blowing away but hard to see which way it's aimed I can use the year stick to slowly turn the quad until I see the red light then simply press forward on the right stick and bring it home. Anyway... sort of off topic..Just thought I'd mention it. 

                  Which gps do you use? 3dr stock gps?

                    Good idea for the led. The fact is that in my case, the quad flew very fast and was almost out of sight in few seconds.... I didnt know that land is using gps... that's logical indeed

                    Yes I know exactly what you are talking about with Naza. My brother and I both fly quads regularly. He has a Phantom. His Phantom is really nice and yes the lights are really nice as you can see a bat warning from a long way away. Unfortunately he has lost not one but TWO! for unknown reasons. Lost the phantom's and two 3 axis gimbals and gopro's. OUCH! In my opinion 3DR is way better. But that's another subject :]

                    I have not had the chance to fly mine during the day since I installed those lights I mentioned but I can tell you they are ridiculously bright! They are so bright if I fly in my backyard I get a white spot burned into my eyes looking at the darn thing. ha I hope to fly very soon, and ironically with my brother, so I will compare daytime brightness. But I would be very surprised if mine were not much brighter. The added advantage also is even when it is tilted you can see it. For instance with the phantom all the lights are aimed down. So if it is flying towards you its much harder [ of not impossible ] to see. I aim my red LED forward, not down, so you can see it a long long ways away. It's also obvious when it is yawing and turning as you can see the green light fade as the red light comes into view as it turns to face you again. I feel %90 more confident flying now.

                    I lost a quad and I will never know for sure why but if I had the experience I have now [ stabilize and full throttle when it doubt! ] I bet I could have saved it with the lights because even though it had gotten away from me and was a long ways away I would have been able to fly it home in stabilize or alt hold before it flew out of view over the tree's :[ I think the compass / gps lost calibration. My fault,,, bad set up. That's why I ask about which gps you are using. If you want to use a cheaper gps than 3dr I've had really good luck with a neo7. Make sure it's set up for a APM or Pixhawlk before you order the wiring connector is different. But if you want reliability I have never had any surprises from 3dr gps. Yes the sat count can take longer but it's more than just that... it's the velocity info as well a gps provides. I used the brand new Neo 8 with almost instant 13 sats yet actual performance wasn't any better than a neo 7 or 3dr gps from what I experienced. 

          • I was flying with 3.2, but it appeared to go into AUTO mode when there were was no mission defined. (The mission waypoints aren't in the log file right, you can only retrieve them from the copter via MAVLINK?)

      've never had a problem 10m / s speed.

    • I increase WPNAV_SPEED normally to 10m/s as well, and have not had an issue with it.
