Flying solely with Joystick/APM

Is this a clever thing to do? Am I playing risky flying solely with a Joystick and the APM? I'm using a 900MHz XBee and have never had issues so far but I haven't heard anybody else here talk about doing this before so wondered if it's not considered a wise move.

  • I decided to try out the joystick functionality today. (Props all off)

However, when I used the joystick to arm the quad, my ESCs all went into fast beeping.  Looks like I'll have to recalibrate them all.

Wonder if anyone else has seen this before.

  • Today I have test my APM with Logitech Attack 3 Joystick and it work. Unfortunately the joystick doesn't have Rudder axis, so I set it None in Planner. When I enable the joystick function, the joystick Rudder output still active. Now my plane rudder move to the right as rudder joystick show in planner. So is there a way that I can disable the joystick rudder output?

  • I'm not one of the biggest sticklers for rules, however here in Australia (and probably many other countries) you need a 'buddy' on a buddy box to take over when flying via FPV if you get into trouble.  Now you probably are not doing any FPV while using the PC joystick, however laptops do crap out at the worst of times so I think having the RC link still active with a buddy ready to take over is good insurance against loss of control.  I really like the idea of having all control and feedback through a pc, however having someone there holding the RC Tx in case something goes wrong would be my preference.

  • I would do it except last time I checked it did not support delta wings.
Long term I think it's the only way we should perform manual manouvers but there are probably some that disagree.
