Advice needed to script my first auto mission

Hello,

Relatively new to my quadcopter, I've been flying until now (I started two weeks ago) only in stabilize mode using my turnigy radio as the single way command the quad.

I did not yet try missions.

I am training on a football field (100 meters x 70 meters) which gives me enough space to learn control the beast (not trees, no people, no cars, etc).

I feel like trying now a simple mission like take-off->fly to a waypoint 30 meters away, then maybe two or three more waypoints, come back to launch and land.

Could you help me with writing the script line details to configure in the mission planner to carry a mission like this? What should I pay attention for that is not obvious (for example special parameters value in altitude ? waypointt radius ?) ?

Should I configure a flight mode as "RTL" in case it would fly away (or is stabilize enough?)?

How do I start the mission : should I first take off manually in stabilize then swith in auto mode or does the beast take off alone from immobility on the ground once i flip the switch in auto mode ? How should the throttle stick be positioned at that moment ? and then during the mission ? Does it land alone too ? Should I touch the throttle stick at landing moment ?

Thx for advices,

Hugues

Thx, helpful advices. Will try alt hold first then loiter to check baro.
I am afraid of auto take off because when i take off manually I must sometimes roll/pitch compensate. is this normal or should I be able to take off just with the throttle stick? Another question: i raise the throttle stick very slowly: maybe should I raise it faster to get out of ground effect faster ?

Start slow don't try to do to much to fast. Try flying to 2 waypoints. Try just landing. Try just taking off. No GPS no missions. You have to have GPS. Fly at a large field away from people. Once you can do the small simple stuff, then try more complex missions. Remember you need to know how to fly in stabilize mode, so you can recover from any problem.

    Good luck and fly safe.

  • If all you have tested is stabilise mode I would suggest not going to auto yet, not until you have tuned and tested both Altitude hold and Loiter.

Altitude hold will indicate how well your system is handling the baro and if you are running 2.9.1 (you haven't stated what FW you are running) how much vibration you have in your Z axis.

Once happy with Alt hold then loiter will indicate GPS accuracy and your how your nav PIDs are working.

When you can loiter without any problems then set a simple mission of probably a couple of waypoints, one out and one back, fly to height and select auto.

The Wiki has good detail about setting up missions, a worthwhile read.

  • I am jumping on here as I am interested to hear people's comments on this as I have not yet done a waypoint mission.

I would say that having stabilize at the ready is the best plan as it doesn't use GPS and altitude sensors.. which could be in a problematic state of your mission is going bad.  Good idea on using a football field .. which typically is surrounded by seating.. so if something happens and it flies off might just hit bleachers.. assuming there are some.
