I need to be able to hike and ski with the Iris+I was thinking of trying to figure out a way to lash the Iris onto the outside of a backpack. I'm a bit concerned about how to do that in a safe and secure way. My plan for the gimbal was just to carve out some foam to make a gimbal-lock.Inside the pack I would store a black pearl 7inch monitor, the TX, Android device, a couple batteries, and props.I have a travel hard case which stores everything nicely, so this is just for shoots in hard to reach places with the minimum of equipment nessisary.Any recommendations would be appreciated.

I have skied with the Fuerte backpack a number of times now. It works pretty damn well, even with a TriPod lashed to the side. Luckily drones are pretty light by design, so it all comes down to balance and this pack feels balanced when full.
At one point I had it loaded up with the Iris+, a Black Perl monitor, a Nexus 9 tablet, a Galaxy S4, 6 props in their original boxes for extra protection (4 flight props and 2 spares), 6 batteries (2 in extra side pockets), the TX, battery charger, and assorted tools. I also had a tripod lashed to the side. Thats a lot of stuff to jam into such a small pack. I'm pretty happy with that.
I have two issues:
Two layer approach. There is a top layer of foam that is removable, giving you access to more storage compartments below. For me, this is just a hassle. When I'm on the side of a mountain, I just want to be able to reach in to grab what I need. I don't want to have to remove a layer of foam which can then blow away or get wet and dirty. On the other hand, this approach allows them to provide more storage than you would normally get in a pack this small.
Crinkled Foam. The foam arrived crinkled/crushed in certain spots where it is thin. Its no big deal, mostly an aesthetic issue. Pictures of crushed foam below all the other images.
Exterior (note tripod attached to side):

Outer pockets filled with foam for protection (I use one such pocket for my black perl):
Thank you for posting the pictures. Once my Iris+ arrives, I will have to decide if I want to go with this built backpack or cut my own foam for a 5.11 Rush 72 backpack.

Mine is on the way. They don't have it up on their site yet, but I ordered mine by phone.
I can't speak to the quality of the pack since I don't have it yet, but the customer support has been excellent. Since I first inquired, they have been keeping me up to date, and today the rep I spoke to personally grabbed the case out of inventory and ran it down to shipping (with minutes to spare) so that I could get it in time to bring on a trip tomorrow.
And a big thank you to Jack Ness (see above) for making me aware of this option.

Same here. I contacted them and was able to order the backpack and the hardcase.
Both look really well designed and durable. Since I mostly hike to my locations the backpack is going to a huge asset to me.
I'll be sure to post pics and a review of them both, once I receive them.

I just received 2 cases from Fuerte Cases one is the hard case and the other is the backpack edition.
And I can not tell you just how impressed I am with both of the cases. Very well made, plenty of room for most everything you should need and very well thought out in terms of storage locations.
The hard case has an extendable handle with 2 wheels at one end, 2 latches at the front with a twist lock on each. Waterproof seal. The pre-cut foam is well thought out. Everything fits in nice and snug.
My IRIS+, w/ the 3DR long legs attached, has a Feiyu-Tech G3 Ultra attached. My FatShark transmitter with a Mad Mushroom antenna is secured exactly like how Colin shows here
The IRIS+ fits nicely in the case with all items above attached just as I would have it if I were to fly.
There is room for 4 IRIS+ batteries, the stock charger (I dont use that) some tools, Controller, FPV monitor, tablet, props and some other cut outs that can be used for any other additional items you want to carry.
The dense foam they use is a product I have used in the past when I made a custom case for my 750. It is very strong and provides great support and protection. I wanted to carry some items differently so I have already customized my storage to accommodate those items. The foam is easy to cut and will hold any pattern you want.
The backpack is just as well designed and built as the hard case. The interior foam is the exact same layout and configuration as the hard case so you can easily transfer items from one to other to the exact same locations.
The backpack itself feels tough. The material is just as good, if not better, than some of my mountaineering packs. Plenty of clips to secure everything. 2 internal zip pockets, each one could easily hold a 10" tablet. A padded shoulder strap and 2 padded backpack straps.
I loaded everything I would need into the backpack and tried it on. Extremely comfortable, nothing felt off or out of balance. Both arms were able to move freely. No pressure on any part of my back other then what one would expect from a backpack.
Once again, extremely impressed and pleased with both items. Highly recommended and the people at Fuerte Cases are great to work with.
Here are a few quick pictures. I will get some additional ones up later on.
Thanks for posting the pictures. I used to have my Phantom 2 stored in a 5.11 Rush 72 bag. I am still debating between the softcase here or cutting foam for the 5.11 back.

I have the hard case from 3DR, a similar need for skiing and hiking, and I get a little queasy thinking about damage in the soft case. I'd love a harness that would attach to the hard case....http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/983541-REG/rucpac_rucpac_hard...
Hi Erik,
I spoke with a sales rep at Fuerte Cases last week and they said they will be making a soft backpack very similar to this here:
http://www.amazon.com/Backpack-Phantom-Vision-Microraptor-Pro/dp/B0...
Should be available by the end of January 2015.
Check their website here if you like:
