Iris+ Suspected Motor or ESC Failure

I'm very disappointed with my Iris+. I managed to get less than ten minutes flying time before it crashed. Whist on loiter mode one of the motors suddenly lost thrust causing it to fly uncontrollably toward the ground (Lucky it didn't head toward me!)

I can't work out for the life of me what caused it??? ESC, motor?? I have temporarily glued the arm back on with CA to in order to test the motor.

I have been seeing the dual blinking yellow lights a fair amount and have noticed post crash gyro, baro, accelerometer issues (ie. spastic gyro and a message in mission planner saying bad gyro error).

I have attached the .bin file and a video showing the motor issue, I would appreciate any suggestions?3691155085?profile=original

  • Those new arms are very brittle...
  • I just received my Iris+ and noted a similar problem on the first flight.  About 8 min into the flight, the Iris+ was hovering above home at an elevation of ~ 30M.  Then without warning the motors throttled down and it did a vertical crash.  Nothing was broken.  I stopped the flight (it was getting dark) then started up the next day without recharging.  It seemed to fly OK for another 7min.  There was a 2-3 second period where it seem to loose power, but recovered.

I don't have Ground Station running yet, so do not know how to evaluate the flight.

    Suggestions welcomed.

    • Did all four motors loose power equally? Sounds like their might be a power distribution/esc issue.

      Hi Phil,

Please open up a ticket with us, help@3drobotics.com and please include the logs.  My team is ready to help!

    • Sorry for the problems.

I have an Iris and have not had that issue before.

Best way to diagnose these issues is with the dataflash log files from the Iris+.

Connect your Iris+ to your computer and open up APM or Mission Plannner and download the log files.

      They can be downloaded here.

In APM this can be found on the graphs page.

If you need help examining the file, post it here so others can look at it.

    Hi John,

I'm sorry you had such a poor experience with your IRIS+.  I've made a few comments to the ticket you have open with us, please check your email.  If there's anything further we can do for you, please let me know.

    • Thanks Vu,

Apart from the issue with motor I'm fairly impressed with the build quality and capability it provides. Looking forward to sharing my positive experiences with the Iris+ in the future.
